Limited of necessity in both time and space.

Rented a table at the Nampa, ID gunshow this weekend, 9/9 - 9/10, and among other firearms will be offering my LH Model 70 LT .30-06, in excellent shape and comes with the box and all the original paperwork. That'll be the only left hander on the table unless you count single shots.

What do you expect to get for it? The '06 and .270 seem to get bid up pretty quick and high in online auctions.

Nice rifle! It would look right at home next to my Lefty 7mm WSM Sporter lll. Best of luck with the sale.

I have a price in mind that should be in line with the current market but don't want to lock myself into it publicly in case it doesn't sell. If it doesn't I'd most likely offer it here and would have to take shipping into consideration.

Jim,

I’m north of you, in Cascade.

What single shots? 😉.

Henry single shot .30-30 and a Winchester (Miroku) 1885 Traditional Hunter in 38-55, also a Remington 510P .22 but that's a bolt action single shot so not counting it.

I would be very interested in purchasing this rifle if it doesn’t sell at the show. I’ll definitely keep my eye out here on Monday. Beautiful rifle for sure.

Well, it didn't sell.

I'm going to follow up on a local inquiry first since I'd prefer to sell it face to face for cash, but if that doesn't work out I'll put it in the classifieds. Doing my homework on shipmygun and finding a proper sized outer box - the factory box is really big - in case I need to ship it. We'll see.

The last rifle I sold and shipped I used ship-my-gun service and it saved the buyer close to 40% IIRC. Don't throw away the original box, a lot of buyers would pay the extra shipping to get it.

Just researched that and I couldn't ship it with the original box. ShipMyGun has a box size limit of no more than 1/2" greater than 48x9x7, the Winchester factory box alone is 51x10x4 so add some to that for a plain brown outer box.

With the rifle broken down to fit a 36x6x6 box, sample prices with full insurance going from Idaho to various places run around $40 with shipmygun vs. either side of $100 with priority mail and a full size outer box.

Trying to sell a .22 rifle with shipmygun as a trial run. Had about given up trying to ship guns but if it works out then I may have a few more to sell here rather than staying within the local area.

Maybe they've changed their policies? The Safari Express I sold shipped in it's original box inside a double box. I listed the size at 51x9x7 and 15 lbs. Once you get past figuring it all out, it worked great.........pre-printed label the UPS desk Nazi didn't question, just handed it over and left.

They could have changed it, I'd never checked into it before. I emailed them earlier today to ask:

Good morning,

Looking at shipping a long gun that needs a large outer box, 54” x 12” x 5” at least. The weight will be no more than 11 pounds.

Starting the process of creating a label, it shows a max size of 48x9x7 but that’s really ambiguous since the size message is grayed out.

So, is an 11 pound package 54x12x5 inches okay to use with shipmygun?

Thanks,
Jim

and got this reply:

Hello,
The package can not be more than a half inch larger than the dimensions (48x9x7) listed on the website and can not weigh more than 15lbs.
Thank you,
Karen J.

I shipped a rifle using shipmygun a couple weeks ago, my box was bigger than what the site said I could use as well, I screwed around looking for a smaller box and finally said screw it and called them up, the lady who answered was super nice and told me the size of the box does not matter, it’s only the weight… I found that hard to believe but took a chance and printed the label off and had zero problems , it was the best rifle shipping experience I’ve ever had, NY to California with insurance for $2,800 and I believe it was right around $50, I had another quote for $125+++ using the regular UPS site, in the past I’ve even been billed later on for more when the auditing department measures or checks the weight again while in transit… I would definitely call them, she told me the box specs size on the shipmygun site was from years ago when they used to even provide boxes for shippers to use, maybe something has changed recently but that was my experience.

I would be very interested in how this company would handle an insurance claim.

48" is the length cut off for UPS. You get a $15 upcharge for any box longer than 48".

A big thanks to Jim. I bought this lovely Model 70 yesterday. It's in great shape, and I look forward to shooting it. I owned a couple of Model 70s, but they were right handed models I inherited from my father. I sold them, thinking I didn't need RH rifles. Whether that was smart is something worth drinking about. wink

I always wanted a classic "Rifleman's Rifle" Model 70. Might as well get it in the classic "American Cartridge" .30-06.

This will have to be a project for next year. Deer and elk season are nearly here, and I won't have time to work up a load, etc., on the .30-06.

Thanks, Jim.

You bet - it was really nice meeting you and glad the rifle went to a real sportsman.

Tom flew down to Boise in his plane to pick up the rifle, never had someone do that before. wink
