Getting ready to buy one of the lower priced Legacy line models in 308. The lowest priced ones come with the rubber coated Hogue stock and for about $90 more I can get one with a "wood, walnut color" stock. The wood stock seems to me to have kind of similar lines to the Weatherby Vanguard stock. I've heard mixed reviews on the Hogue but seems like a lot of owners say they like them. Anyone here have one of the 1500s with the wooden stock. if so what do you think of it? Opinions on the Hogue also appreciated.

I love the hogue stock. Right size for me and I like how it feels a little tacky. Only issue is I chose the wrong caliber. 10/10, would purchase again.

If it were me I’d take the Hogue stock and save the $90+ “upgrade” to walnut colored wood and put that money towards a Stocky’s Carbon Fiber seconds for $300….the carbon fiber stock will basically cost you $200 considering you didn’t waste the $100 on the “wood”. 😉

Thanks to all that responded. I'll try the Hogue stock model and change it out if necessary.

I hate the Hogue stocks that come on Howa 1500s, so mine have been restocked with B&Cs, V2 take-offs, and NOS walnut stocks that were made for S&W 1500s. GPC is still showing two different styles of these walnut stocks on their site. The ones that I bought were for the 1700LS, but they aren't available anymore.
The last time that I looked, you could buy a V2 stock from Weatherby for around $140 and were found under "accessories" on the Weatherby site.

I hate the Hogue stocks. Big, fat, bulky, heavy damn things. Twice as much plastic in them as needs be. I'd much prefer to have the walnut stock.

The only hogue stocks i like came on my TC Icons. My howa HB (20") 1500 hogue stock was flimsy and got replaced with a B&C medalist.

The rubbery Hogues, are too heavy, and the rubber pick up all kinds of forest duff. Besides that, the rubber pulls at your face under recoil.
If I were getting another Howa, I’d get a barreled action from Brownells, then hunt for a stock I actually want, or just pony up for a carbon version.
What fresh Hell is this?

I bought one with the Hogue stock on sale for cheaper than a barreled action from Brownells. I immediately took the Hogue off and sold It for 50.00. Then called H.S. Precision and using my industry professionals discount, ordered a stock built to my specs as to colors, LOP and reciol pad. Meanwhile I took the barreled action to work, bead blasted and reblued as I didn't care for the factory finish. I ended up with about 550.00 into the whole thing.
