I have an old Rem M17 shotgun I am thinking about cleaning up and refinishing.

Most of the info I’ve found regarding 1920’s era Rem stock finish points to a reddish stain and lacquer. Im thinking about using something like a couple coats of danish oil with appropriate tint and then spraying a couple coats of nitro lacquer over it.

Anybody know if I’m on the right track or if I’m headed for an unsightly mess?

Thanks-

Lacquer over oil is probably not a good combination. Try a water or alcohol-based stain.

Oil to oil, lacquer to lacquer or alcohol. Most makers use a spray on lacquer stain, one step, process today. In the 20 and 30s they used alcohol based stain.

Brownells sells a Win pre 64 red stain for walnut stocks, that is not oil based.
