Gentlemen, I have a friend who has been going up to Montana and deer hunting for a few years and he got an elk tag this year. Me being a predator caller, hand loader and upland guy I only have some ideas for him and wanted to run some ideas passed you guys. He has decided on a Savage in 300 win mag, his deer rifle is a Savage 110 hunter in .270 win. I am thinking, Barnes TTSX, Nosler partitions, Federal Fusion and Remington Core-lokt. He plans on keeping his shots out to a max of 300 yards possibly 350 since that is what he is comfortable with an ethical shot. Any advice is apprecitated.

Any of those bullets will work fine on an elk. You could also add the Nosler Accubonds to the list.

In a 300wm, I'd personally use a 200gr. Nosler partition or a Barnes TTSX or 175 LRX.

Federal Fusion? No experience with them but I thought they were deer bullets

Yup, stick to the heavier end with the CoreLokt's and Fusions and life should be easy.

Savage 110 hunter in .270 win.
Tell him to load up some 150 gr in any decent bullet and go kill him an elk. The 270 is a very good elk caliber and will easily handle 300 yds. Sight it in for 200 and it'll be within a minute of elk out to 300.

Fusions would work too as they are bonded and won’t come apart. Just go on the heavier side. But For some of the prices I’ve seen on those, I’d spend the $ and go partition or accubonds. 140-150 for the 270, 180-200 for the 300.

I just don’t care for the old corelokt. Maybe the new ones are better and more consistent. Don’t know enough about them.

My main elk medicine is 130 ttsx in 270 and 168 ttsx in 06. Monos work better the faster they go. No need to go heavier for caliber as most retain 99% of their weight
I feel Hornady and Nosler are still playing catch up to barnes in the mono game.

All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.

Swift A-Frame 180s and Nosler partitions 180-200.
Have a track record on big bull elk. Fail-Safes if it is record-class.

Good advice use the one you are comfortable with. I've shot 2 bulls with 180 partitions out of the 300 win mag. And seen 2 shot with the 270 and 150's dead is dead no matter what you use.

Those 200 grain Partitions in a 300 mag or 06 is really good stuff.

All but one of my elk have fallen to the 180 TTSX out of a 300 H&H so that would be my suggestion although there are other great bullets out there.

A .277 150 interlock with a stiff charge of 4831.
Or just buy a box of core lokts and roll with it.

At that range a 180g or 200g partition in the 300 or a 150g partition over 58-59g imr 7828 in the 270.

Lots of different bullets would work well in a 300 but that 150 partition over 7828 works great for average range elk in a 270.
