Thermals are pretty common in the Southwest. We see them in the distance on highways, and on desert pans, dry lake beds. It's an optical illusion created by rising heat waves. Someone not accustomed to seeing them could easily mistake them for water. Specially if you are already suffering from heat exhaustion. Wabi
