Moles and gophers have enjoyed 20 years of habitrail bliss on the property we bought 3 summers ago.
Them days are over for those digging sumnabitches. I figure I’m killing something like 10th generation moles and gophers by now.
The old owner, whom had this place for 16 years, lives in Southern Cal. He would only visit the property a few times each year, staying no more than 3 days at a time.
I just found out from the former caretaker of this place, the owner was a ‘live and let live person’ who wouldn’t allow him to trap the diggers. Because of his “Don’t kill policy.” I inherited a problem property.
In one of the major pastures these furry ass-holes tunneled like the Vietcong. Their tunnel systems were so bad that my tractor and zero turn mower were consistently mowing dirt mounds and finding sinkholes with a tire.
I spent this summer tearing out most of the pastures, leveling, and reseeding them. Now with the ground cleared, I can see fresh sign.
I’ve been unleashing hate on them with an arsenal of weaponry. My current tools of death are the DK1 gopher traps, scissor mole traps, 17 HMR and a 16 gauge.
I’ve been going gangster on them for the last 3 days. My kill card ain’t that impressive yet. But I’m racking up kills.
1 mole soul taken with a DK1 trap. (That was luck).1 gopher soul kilt with a 17 HMR - head shot at 62 yards. Another gopher soul taken with a 16 gauge - which was very impressive, said my wife…
I had just gotten up, waiting on coffee. I’m in my underwear, no shirt, just glassing the field, when I see puffs of dirt being launched from a hole. I slid into my boots, sans socks, grabbed my Browning and bolted out the door into the wild. I ran straight at the hole, keeping a large Doug Fir between myself and the furry digger. Shotgun up, I peeked around the tree and waited for her little head to pop out. When it did, I let the gauge roar into the back of that mthfkrs head. God loves you, enjoy the heavenly pastures.
And today, I snapped a fatty in the DK1 trap. Those scissor traps, which aren’t that cheap, have sucked, so far.
Pics or it didn’t happen. 🦫

FWIW, shooting them is more fun, but you might try a Gopher Hawk (or 3). Slight amount of finesse in placement, but otherwise easy to set and kills them while you sleep...easy to dispense the critters after death too.
When my daughter was around 4, I taught her about voles. A few weeks later her teacher was instructing the class on mammals and asked the class if anyone knew what a vole was. Daughter's hand immediately shot up: "A vole is a type of underground varmint!" she proudly proclaimed. Apparently, her teacher was incredulous.
Daughter was also the first student ever to catch a bug on the school's Great Bug Hunt field trip (12 years running). The teacher told me that she knew Julia would be the first to catch a bug. She caught a large grasshopper and it was humorous to see all the kids gather around her to see. All the oohhs and awwws made me smile. Proud of her I was.

What’s her hourly rate to capture and kill moles?
