My father and his friends hunted New England and the Catskills in the 50's and 60's. They all used Marlins chambered in 30-30, 32 win spec and 35 rem. My father was a 35 rem guy all the way. Nothing was scoped then either. My dad worked for Marlin at the time and reason for them all using Marlins, Winchester was down the street though.
When I hunted PA and Maine with different friends and camps, there were a lot of levers and pumps along with a few bolts. My first 20+ years of hunting was pretty much all levers with an occasional Rem 740/7400 or 7600. Now its short light bolt guns. Those old levers worked then and still work now, still have a couple including my first Marlin from 1981
