Quick Question:
What is your best load for a 175 grain Matchking in a 308.

I'm shooting a 1995? vintage M700 VSSF. (I think 1995 or so, don't really remember.)

Have you fired that load in warmer weather?

Warmer than 95 degrees? Nope..

Warmer than 95*? The first pic of BSA’s is the load at 95* while the second picture is the same load (45.5 CFE223) shot when it was 25* out….a 70* temperature swing with the same load. 👍🏼

I was pretty happy to see that it was still shooting well with that much temp increase. I do know that when I was working on loads, 47gr was too much. Even at 24 degrees f. During load development, and testing, the rifle had stiff bolt lift for about 3 out of 10 shots. Load was damn accurate, but if it's showing signs of overpressure, I back off:

I even tested that load out to 400 yards:

Velocity on that load was 2,760-2780 fps and book max shows 2,700 with a 24" barrel. The winchester HV I was shooting has a 26" barrel. I believe the 47gr load would have been way overpressure at 95 degrees, since it was showing pressure signs at 24-26 degrees..

175 SMK over a mild load of Varget ignited with a Fed lg. match primer. 2.810 OAL in a Lapua case. Rem mil-spec 5R. Shoots in the 4's

I took notes from a Brad Suave article in the 308 Win. cartridge section at 6mmbr.com. & it worked for me.

The OP will probably have to up the charge weight. If his 700 is like the half dozen I own it's throat will be much deeper than that 95 Palma chamber.

I kinda did too. Substituted Re15 for the Varget. My goal of 2750 fps muzzle was to ensure supersonic at 1k yards.

Tips from Brad Sauve, 2004 F-TR Nat'l Champion
With my .308, I tried A LOT of different loads in the first 600 rounds, starting with 42.0-44.5 N150 for the first 200 rounds, then moving to 44.0-45.0 Varget for the next 300 rounds. I tried different bullets (Sierra 175 MKs both moly and naked, Nosler 180gr Ballistic Tips, 175gr Bergers), different cases (Lapua, Federal), primers (Rem, CCI BR, Fed Match), and, oh yes, seating depths (on the lands to 0.10" off, and several distances in between). Even after 500 rounds of testing, I still wasn't satisfied, and frankly, I was growing weary.

I finally found my "sweetheart" load on February 14, 2000 (Valentines Day), almost seven months after getting the rifle. This is the load I still shoot today and I shot all weekend at the F-Class Nationals. The break-through came when I discovered that slower velocities produced outstanding accuracy. I found that Varget pushing a 175 SMK at about 2610 fps delivered quarter-MOA groups out to 300 yards and half-minute or better groups beyond that distance. Since developing that load, I've used Lapua cases and Russian primers, but the core elements, 43.0 grains Varget with 175 MKs seated 0.018" off the lands, has not changed.

Yep! kinda the easy button. I bumped my charge a bit over Suaves to compensate for the 24" barrel & generous throat on my Remington. Haven't shot it at 1000, but all my come ups to 850 indicate my dope is correct & should go subsonic @~1100.

I use 43.5 grs. Varget in Lapua cases with the 175 gr. Sierra in my Model 70 Sharpshooter. Years ago I used 44.5 grs. but had to drop down a bit with a different powder lot number...started getting head expansion on some brass. The rifle seems happy and groups well using 2.810 inch overal length.

Yeah? A wonderment. But guess it did reveal one pertinent, those had a 26" barrel.

not sure if it's going to be the best. but just last night I was working on some 178 grain hornady match bullets. an accurate 2460 is looking awful good. 42.5 grains CCI 250 primer was giving me 2619 FPS shooting 1/2 to 3/4 in groups. without any seating depth adjustment yet just running at 2.800 as the book suggest. I can't get near the lands and feed through the magazine anyway so that's where I started.. I guess I should add that was a PMC case. I think 24-in barrel I have to measure it to be sure and currently I'm not near it. but it was the Ruger American go wild series

The 6.5's & 6's might shoot further without going subsonic & recoil less, the 308 takes over after that. Clean, clean ,clean the bores on those, a lot. 308 go twice as long while not caring. Barrels? The 308 might need one at double the rounds, might not.

I have high BC 6's & 6.5's, love em. They out perform in some ways. But the 308 is such a stalwart here I feel I have keep it around.

Thanks for the advice buddy. My groups are similar to yours. I did a ladder by .5 grains starting at your recommended 45.5 grains. I shot that into a group identical to yours. Ten 46 grains worked very well. 46.5 and 47 grains look good except by the time I shot them I had the sun blasting just above the backstop washing out the scope. That even with a 5 inch sun shade, that bright.
