Question for the board,

I would like to extend my wifi coverage a bit to get better connection for security cameras. The way things sit now I can get just enough coverage to get a signal most of the time, but it's not 100% on the camera I most want to have active. Is there a difference, and can anybody recommend one that works and isn't too much $$?

There are lots to choose from.

Try to make sure that your booster or extender will come close to the same Hz/speed of your router to minimize it's usefulness.

If just for a camera, & not for something like streaming on a TV, it may not be much of an issue.............never used one for just that purpose.

I would get a router that has satellites, like Orbi and several others. Also, they do get old and will need to be updated eventually. Ours is going on 5 years and we were told by the manufacturer and our internet provider to update them as our internet had not been the greatest lately.

That's what I found with a quick search on the 'net. Literally just to run a camera or maybe 2. Very little draw, but some places say there's a difference some say there isn't. I don't want to make the stuff in the house NOT work, just extend the range 30 ft maybe.

When a guy like me doesn't know wtf he's looking at it's hard to know what's right and what's bs. Figured there'd be some insight here might point me in the right direction.

If it matters, I have Starlink.

WiFi 6 Mesh system is what you want. Plume or TP link AX20s

At my property I only have cell coverage thru my wifi modem. If I walk 60 yards to my shop or step out into the back 40, no cell phone worky.

Would a booster/extender piggybacking off the modem give me cell coverage?

This would obviously apply to game or security cameras as well.

Somebody should ax Higginez what extender he uses.

I just use a basic Netgear extender that you can get from Walmart. It's over 150 yards from the main router with a clear line of sight and I have plenty of service. We don't waste money on fancy high powered routers since they get fried by lightning so often. Just use the cheap one the internet service provides.

Those little things that plug into outlets to extend wifi will also plug into an extension cord....

But it also means people can use your wifi from further away...

A simple wifi extender sells for about $20. Internal antenna, weak coverage, and not geared for multi user.

A better solution is a MU-MIMO router, configured as an extender. When I bought one for my business, I paid $250. Now the same thing sells for about $50. It provides much better coverage than a simple extender.

These come with 6-8 external antennas, which the electronics use to steer the direction of the signal. Also, the internal electronics are designed to simultaneously handle multiple users rather than time sharing a single channel.
