I inherited a Mosin Nagant with a dark bore and rifling which appears less than ideal. Accuracy is poor. My question: Can this barrel be re-bored to a larger diameter with fresh rifling? Is the 360 Buckhammer feasible as it also is a rimmed cartridge?

Thank you for your response.

Respectfully yours,
Sherwood

Yeah, but then you have more money invested than what the thing's worth.

I'd start looking for a good used barrel.

Didnt someone rebore or rebarrel Mosin Nagants to 444 Marlin a few years ago?

Very doubtful a .360 BH cleans up a 7.62x54 chamber without cutting off threads and rechambering, by then you'd be too much into the project for it to make financial sense.

More importantly, details on the Mosin? Most of them aren't too desirable, but there are some variants that bring big money (especially Finnish variants or SA marked models).

First, I'd scrub that bore--there may be useful life within it yet. If if doesn't work with jacketed bullets after a proper cleaning, then it might be worth trying it with cast bullets. You can work miracles with them if you're willing to go far enough down the rabbit hole.

If neither of those things works, then I'd look for an old copy of Cartridges of The World from back when it was still written by Frank C. Barnes. It will have a chapter on European wildcats, and I believe that some editions describe something like a 9x54R or a 9.3x54R, which were meant to address the exact issue that you describe.

The 7.62x54R has roughly the same case capacity as a 308 so the resulting wildcats would be much like the 358 Winchester or 9.3x57 Mauser.

Add $116 for a set of dies to the 9.3 equation.

That sounds like an interesting project.

There is a fellow on AccurateReloading.com 'dpcd' that does a lot of work on 91's and a couple others that have done some mods on them. You might want to post your question there.
