I was curious about this carbine since seeing it a lot lately in news images.

It's an M16A1 rifle, barrel cut just aft of the gas port. Then a new gas port drilled at carbine length, FSB pinned, and carbine buttstock assembly.

So it's essentially a 13" barreled carbine with an A1 barrel profile, and a 1/12 twist. I'm assuming M193 is the issued ammo.

I'm sure a lot of you already knew this, but thought I'd share for anybody interested.

Interesting. Sounds handy and light. I bet it doesn't take a lot to get a 3000fps 55gr FMJ to tumble in a target with that 1/12 twist.

Tumble they will, and that would be a major contributor to the M16’s lethality.

I have yet to grasp why people want to shorten barrels etc with the M16 platform. In the A1 form they were as good as needed.

When I was in FT Hood, TX in the early 90s I saw a couple of short M16s like the one pictured. They weren't stamped XM177 though

I don’t know if I’ve ever seen an optics mount like the one in the OP? It looks like it’s only attached to the front vertical post of the carry handle and that’s the only part that contacts the weapon. I can see daylight under the EOtech where it’s suspended over the hand guard….

I saw some footage on the BBC of a close up of empty brass on the street, ‘09 Lake City. Don’t know which side it was from but it was at the music festival site.

Pretty wild. Has to be effected by inconsistent mass produced ammo?

Yeah I would take those numbers as 'ball park' regarding consistency between lots, and mfgrs.

Probably has to do with door-to-door urban fighting. I agree that a good 18-20" rifle-gassed lightweight rifle is a great performer otherwise with all that velocity. The classic joke about the rifle (vs. a shorty carbine) is that it effectively turns any ammo into duty-grade ammo.
