Anyone using an IWB holster for a Colt Detective Special ?

Am thinking my Colt wouldn't show much below my belt, thus concealing under a short jacket better.

Seems most IWB holsters are made for autos.

Thanks! Virgil B.

I used to carry my Colt Detective Special in a Milt Sparks Versamax II. Worked great.

Thanks Hawkeye!

Recently bought a Miami classic shoulder holster for packing my High power under my left shoulder, so I'm packing my Colt backup in a pancake holster on my right side.

Am thinking an IWB would conceal a little better. I'll check out the Versamax II.

I've never heard of anyone being sorry they bought one. You will likely have to wait eight or nine months to get it, though.

Is there another place for buying Milt Sparks holsters?

I know shops like Brownells have "some" Milt Sparks holsters in stock, but usually just for 1911's and Glock.

Can't imagine waiting 9 months for one.

Thanks! Virgil B.

Sparks has a list of "authorized resellers" linked on their web site.

I'm a big IWB fan, but with snub revolvers there was never enough barrel under the belt to really secure the revolver. Throughout the day I always felt the revolver working its way out of the holster. Switched to a high ride pancake and that worked well. Gun I was carrying was a 1961 Colt Cobra

Give Kramer a look, serious quality with about half the wait of Sparks.

Looks like Kramer is about 3-4 months out on wait time.

Lots better than 8-9 months.

GunGeek;

I did try packing my Detective Special in a IWB designed for a 2-1/2" S&W K frame.

It did "squirt" out of it, but am thinking a holster made for the Detective Special should hold the revolver in well?

The Real Hawkeye; Did you ever have problems with the Milt Sparks holster you used?

Never. At least not a problem that wouldn't have occurred with any other similar design.

One time, many years ago, however (and this was a million to one shot occurrence), I was taking my dog (a 75 pounder) to the vet, and I pulled into the parking lot, stepped out and opened the back door to hook my dog to the leash. After he was hooked to it, he jumped out, and somehow (despite the gun being under a pullover shirt) the leash got caught under the grip of the revolver, and when the dog jumped out, it pulled the Detective Special straight up and flung it into the air a couple of feet in front of me, and up to about head height at the top of its course of travel. There were a group of people walking towards me, and in an amazing feat of reflexes and agility, I somehow snatched it out of the air perfectly by the grip and stuck it back in the holster before any of them happened to look my way.

True story. I doubt Johnny Ringo himself could have handled that situation any more adroitly than I did. All the stars were aligned just right that day, I guess.

You could go for a Summer Special

This is for an N Frame, but it gives you an idea

Or a PMK model. Both are from Sparks.

I never cared about the wait time, as I am going to be using the thing for many years, (and some I have been using for 30 years now) so waiting a little longer and getting something that is right, instead of something that is cut rate and lesser quality, never made much sense to me. Longer wait times from the better makers is worth it to me.

Mackay;

Good advice! The best sometimes takes longer.

Soon to be 71. Hope I don't "kick the bucket" before a new holster can get here.(GRIN!)

I've got two Summer Specials. One for the 1911 and another for my Glock 19.

They are the most comfortable IWB I've used yet.

Mackay;

What do you think of the VM 2 compared to the Summer Special II?

Any difference in comfort level? As stated I've had good luck with the SS II, and like them really well.

Do you or Hawkeye know of any retired LEO's who might have a SS II or a VM II for a Colt Detective Special who might consider selling it?

I looked on E Bay, but didn't find anything. (not much of a 'puter whizz!)

If not, I think I'll order one or the other Monday. May as well get the "hurry up and wait" started.

Thanks! Virgil B.

Checked the authorized resellers list on Milt Sparks web site.

Didn't see any that had a Milt Sparks IWB "in stock" for a Colt Detective Special.

I used to have one, but sold it on eBay a few years ago.

I went ahead and got on the "hurry up and wait" list!

Milt Sparks said it would be about nine months.

I decided to go with the Summer Special II in black horse hide for my Colt.

Already have two of these for other handguns and am very pleased with the comfort of them.

So I figured "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" and stick with the same design that's been working for me for years.

Thanks to all for advice! Virgil B.

It won't supply as much position stability as the VM-II, but should be just fine.
