Found a green 30-06 casing while sheep hunting on the rightly named "Wrong Mountain" here on the Kenai - didn't think much of it.
Next day I went across the valley to the other mountain and killed a ram. That was much more impressive, as he tumbled end over end for a quarter mile and 1500 feet of elevation. Likely the only reason I remember the casing at all.
The only true cost of having a dog is its death.

The US Forest Service some years back found a Winchester complete 1873 rifle very close or inside tree branches, in a remote area of Co-MT or Wyoming.
That would be a real discovery, especially if 44 WCF or 38 WCF cartridges were in the magazine. That rifle is now in a USFS museum.

50 cal steel case in central Wyoming.
Game warden said the USAF would "test" their guns back in the 40's and 50's.
Also found a bigger steel case same area/hunt, not sure of the size but I think it was a mm sized case/round?
I think it is about 2 1/2 to 3 xs the size of the 50.
On top of the fireplace mantel at home.
Ill try to remember to take a pic.

Keep in mind that in most of the rest of the world brass cases are very valuable. They get sold to scrappers or made by local artisans into jewelry/ornaments, bells or buttons. or reloaded.
I remember in the boonies in Nothwestern MX when I was a kid, all kinds of used "case conversions" were going on. When the gubmint outlaws something, it just becomes more precious.
That's when I discovered how many other cartridges could be fired in a .410. Subsistence hunters get REALLY CLOSE, so they don't have to think about all the ballistic details we obsess about....

10 or so years ago I was hunting in Coutada 10 in Mozambique. One day we stopped at an old cinder block Portuguese hunting lodge from the colonial era. After the civil war broke out the Portuguese left the country and the lodge was taken over by government Renamo forces as an OP. One day they were attacked by Frelimo rebels and a heavy firefight ensued. The building were pockmarked with bullet holes and a few walls knocked down by RPG’s. AK 47 cases littered the ground. The rebels apparently won the battle but they went through a lot of ammo to do it! The walls looked like Swiss cheese….. I took a lot of pictures.

Years ago I found a 257 Weatherby case on Little St Simmons Island in Georgia. In the dunes where I found the case the shot couldn't have been more than 25 to 30 yards. At that range, a shot at one of the small fallow deer that used to inhabit the island would likely ruin a lot of very good meat. On another part of the island a shot of several hundred yards could be very possible and the 257 Weatherby would have fit right in.

Almost got thrown in jail at TAMBO for having four empty 300 WM brass in my carryon! I collect but I guess the TAMBO’a collect them as well!

I enjoy finding old cartridge empties while hiking or hunting. An old 30 Remington, .225 Winchester or 30-40 krag helps date the hunter, as opposed to modern .270 or .243 brass. I always look around and wonder what critter they were shooting at. In my part of the southwest, an old military brass 45-70 or 50-70 likely means a soldier or an Apache shooting at something, perhaps each other.
I saw that cartridge belt in the classifieds, for culling, made me wonder what you guys might find in the way of empties in Africa. Certain eras of brass could perhaps date the cartridge to a specific time in Africas history? A .405 Winchester, gotta wonder if maybe Teddy Roosevelt left it there. A pile of 7.62x39 here means someone was blasting at some beer bottles, but a pile of 7.62s in Africa likely could have deeper darker history.
Thoughts? I found a very old 6mm Musgrave case in South Africa earlier this year. I'd never heard of that cartridge before I found the case, but learned it was basically a 303 British necked down to 6mm and was really popular among springbok hunters in South Africa for a long time. Though not nearly as common today as it was a couple of decades ago, it also filled that "light" caliber niche for newer hunters to cut their teeth on stuff like springbok, warthog, impala, and blesbok.

The most unusual find was a .44 Bulldog case. Apparently it was a shortened "special" cartridge meant for Webley .44 revolvers.

I don't litter yet when I shoot at a head of game, I leave the brass where I ejected it. That way someone in the future can find it and wonder. I have found several 8mm Lebel's here locally. Only one here and there in the mountains. Whoever the hunter was, he didn't need a second round. I have found scads of old empties. I harvested a bison on the plains of Colorado and used an original 1862/1865 Sharpes carbine and round of ammo loaded in the 1880's. I left the brass where it fell. Someday someone may find it and make the assumption that since many buffalo fell to the 50/70 and this was historically buffalo country, that it probably killed a buffalo. It did just that, however 130 years off from when evidence suggests..

During my June of this year trip to Namibia I found empties at the impromptu shooting range and three 300 Win Mag cases in one blind. The 300 cases were from a hunter that had been in the blind the day before. No empties or litter on any of the properties I've hunted. I did find an Eland horn, wart hog tusk, Oryx skull with horns, while stalking around but they were all old and in poor condition. My PH told me I could keep them but he would give me much better samples if I wished, he said he has LOTS of them. I left all my finds in the field except for one little pretty rock.

I once found two 25-35 cases near Borum Lake in the Wind River Range. We were having lunch on a boulder hillside overlooking the little river that flows down to Godfried Lake…there they were a couple feet apart. The brass was nearly black. Pretty cool.
