We have twice as long a season as Texas does, you just can’t use a gun for half of it. A crossbow is an effective weapon and legal for all of archery, if gun season doesn’t work out for you then that would be your best option.
I think the Oklahoma hunting seasons are great as far as opportunity goes. Plus we have plenty of public land if a guy doesn’t have a place of his own. I think our bag limit is great as well, we can shoot a buck with archery or muzzleloader and then hold out for a bigger one with a rifle if we chose. The Christmas season is awesome for filling the freezer after most of the buck hunting is over with.
I love the long archery season, the fact that muzzleloader usually falls during the pre rut time when bucks are starting to cruise and can be rattled in, and that we get the opportunity to hunt the peak rut with a rifle.
Deer hunters in Oklahoma have it pretty good.
I moved up here from Texas. My hunting buddy/neighbor* asked, "Where you gonna hunt in Oklahoma?"
Honestly, I had no idea! In fact, I had pretty much resigned myself to giving up hunting!!
I have killed more deer, bigger deer and better bucks since 2002 than I did the previous 50 years of hunting in Texas!
Yes sir, Okie deer hunters have a good population of deer. I just wish we had more time. Packing all your gun hunting into 2 weeks gets old!
* - when I told him about the hunting up here, he wanted in on the lease! LOL!
