I don't need to ask why rifles such as this are no longer made. I do regret the loss of quality and lack of craftsmanship. Should be here next week. If I hunt this year I expect this will see some woods time. I sold my I bore 98 Mauser at auction last spring and need something to burn up a pile of 8 X 57I ammo....and maybe kill a deer with. https://www.gunsinternational.com/g...sporting-rifle-8x57.cfm?gun_id=102363593

Sweet rig! About a third of the cost of that gun is in the rear sight. I have a cavalry carbine withe the cocking piece rear sight. Shot a doe with it a couple of years ago. My have to use her again this year.

As SuperCub said, they're a pretty penny but you can find them. Check out MNR Custom in Vermont. He's an artisan who carves and shapes his own wood stocks and makes beautiful rifles:

Beauty. Are those 1888 commission rifles using the .323 bore or the .318 ? Wasn't there a switch up the Germans did concerning 8mm?

The rifle would have originally been .318 Bore and much less likely subject to the updating to .323 than the quantity Arsenal process. As the O/P notes a pile of presumptively .318 to burn up. If that rifle originally had an empty clip bottom gravity-dispenser, hopefully it's been modified. Avoiding Murphy's Law of losing clips or bending them under clumsy footed recovery. My Kar 88, consequence of "all original & unmodified", the effective "clip Bombay" begging for well lighted recovery-friendly terrain! It's a nifty old rifle looking a great specimen, but age, wear and parts replacement, probably suggest mild loads & 'judicious' fielding. Congrats on a worthy representative/collectible specimen! Best! John
