Went to a place we've been once before, old whippet Breeze is 10 YO today, wanted to take him on a nicer walk than the county road.

Pull up to the gate maybe 10 miles from our place and saw this holding it closed. Suitable for keeping the gate closed if the cows wanted out? grin

Was a pain opening it too, as it drags that end in the dirt. Seems it's not very well maintained.

At least we had a pleasant morning for a walk.

And yeah, there's still cows out on that allotment.

You don't have to be a cattel guy to answer that, I'm pretty sure they could untie a bow. Need a square knot to keep 'em in.

Smart cows can untie bows.

The majority ain't really smart, they'd pull the loop instead of the free ends and keep pulling it tighter.

Probably some don't know what bundles are. You cut the the two strands of baling wire, pull them off then fold twice and wrap the remaining wire around it, toss it in the baling wire pile for fixin' fence and making automotive repairs.. grin

Oh, I should have gotten the flagpole clip they used for a closure on that chain. End was broken right off.

Hunters use that gate every year, might have been one of them that broke it and the rancher just happened to have some twine on the truck when he went to check his cattle or put out the salt block we saw up the road.

Judging by the hinge pin it looks like somebody forced the gate open and damaged it. Not all that unusual on these BLM gates this time of year IME

Geno - when you're walking the pooches in that country, do you have to keep an eye out for rattlers?

Sure looks snaky.

People are savages. I don't love gates, but that kind of damage becomes a bigger pain to fix the farther from town. And then, if you DO fix it and the savage is behind the gate, oh darn.

It was probably Jeff0, he couldn't figure out how to untie the string so he broke the hinge to get in.......

If cows really want out, very few fences can hold them. Fences are just to keep them honest. The only reason a gate like that will hold them is that they just won't bother to push it open.
