Honesty is always the best policy so I’ll admit my first Muley was taken with a 1954 Ford pickup. She died off the shoulder after taking out my right front fender, headlight and part of the grill. About three miles south of Beaver, Utah. Next was a 94 30-30.

Ruger Deerstalker .44 magnum

Ruger 77/44 .44 magnum

Now using an unblooded Encore .460 S&W.....a little more reach than the .44 for southern Michigan straight wall cartridge hunting.

First was a 30-06 Woodsmaster I was given from my father in law. Most recently I picked up a CVA Cascade 6.5 that is a blast to shoot out to 1000+.

First was a young 7 point (busted rack) with my Marlin 30AW (Wal-Mart 336) in 30/30. Shot was with the deer facing me and me shooting downhill. Hit him in the neck and flipped him onto his back. 80yards as last shooting light. I quickly ran down to see him and he was still very much alive and blood everywhere, right as my Godfather came to pick me up. I was 11 and that was 2.5ish decades
ago.

My last deer was with a Kimber Classic Select in 257 Roberts. I killed three bucks last year. As I struggle to remember the details of the last one, but he was a cull buck with a screwed up rack. Shot was about 250 yards through the lungs. Short run and wobble, followed by a kick and plume of dust as he fell to the ground.

It’s funny how I can remember the details of the first so easily, yet allow the details of more recent kills to fade so readily.

1st deer was with a borrowed Win 94 in 30-30, around 1965.

1st big game rifle of my own was a sporterized Enfield in 30-06, of course.
I quickly migrated to a Rem 700 in .270 that was my mainstay for decades.

The last rifle and the one I use almost exclusively is a Kimber Hunter in 6.5 CM.
The Hunter and the chambering are to me, the easy button. Light, accurate and has proven to be perfectly capable of handling game up to and including (several times now) elk.

My first deer was with a single shot 410 with 000 buck.

My first rifle deer was with either a Browning A-bolt 243 or Browning BAR 30-06. I shot them interchangeably and don’t remember which.

My last rifle deer was taken with the same BAR in 30-06. It just wears a much nicer scope these days.

When I started WI was still shotgun only opening weekend and rifle for the remainder in many units (59B and 61 were mostly where I hunted then). I had to suffer a 3 shot, Stevens bolt action 20 gauge for the first couple openers. After opening weekend my dad used a 30-06 and I got to tote his BPS with a slug barrel.

Took my first deer with that BPS 12 gauge and a 1oz Brenneke.

First rifle deer was with a Browning Acera 30-06 that I got the previous Christmas.

Last deer was with a Mauser M12 in 308 Win.
