Was curious if there are some 99s that have been custom engraved. I personally like the heavy engraving that you see on old German guns. I’ve read the term “Coin” finish. Been thinking about having some engraving done, but would like some input. Thanks !! Alan

Definitely are, we've seen a number of them. Some really nice ones. Some... not so really nice.

Hmmm. I posted about an 1899 with after market engraving a while back. I don’t know any tricks for navigating to old posts on this site, but it was 2/1/23 titled “1899 Engraving Question”.
Haven’t really come across a lot of them.

Are you asking about engraving that was done relatively recently or engraving that was done shortly after the rifle was manufactured?

It does not matter if recent or otherwise. Would like to see some pics of non factory engraved receivers especially heavy /deep type. Just getting ideas. Alan

Thanks for sharing WYO. I like that style engraving. While fine engraving looks good, it can wear faster. You apparently made this 99 book yourself?? Alan

There are master engravers in your area. Look one up and get a quote. Likely many months and many dollars.
FEGA master engravers

Beyond that a rifle of some sort is required along with 6-9 panels of engraving design.

You'll never get your money back.
But since you won't get your money back, might as well just purchase one.
Here is a good one.

Thanks Southern WI, I looked at the 99 for sale, beautiful ! 20 years ago I bought a Franz Sodia combination gun built around 1970. It has plenty of engraving . I paid $3500. I figured I paid less than what the engraving alone would cost. I do know a guy that teaches engraving, but have not seen him in 20 years. The intent of my post is to look at 99s that were custom engraved to get ideas. I always liked the engraving on the LC Smith ideal grade sxs and I have one. I'm lucky enough to have met and also live near Geoffroy Gournet who is a master engraver. He was the inhouse engraver for all the in house Parker reproduction A-1 Specials back in the day and he is still working full time out of his studio.

I've had him do two projects for me, The Fox 16 gauge 2 barrel set was done with heavy engraving and a French Gray finish. He can do anything from the finest Bulino to heavy Germanic engraving.

If you are referring to Benno he passed. He was a master engraver and taught at the revere academy and he was my friend.

I have no idea when this was done or by whom, it was shown to a couple engravers and they had no idea.

Did you notice it does not have a cocking indicator with a square back bolt?

the scroll work is nice. The deer could have used a little more detail.
It seems like we've seen another pre-90,000 without out a cocking indicator.

studied it some more. The receiver is totally engraved or stippled. The center with the deer is much simpler. I wonder if it was done by two different engravers?
I like to see some engraving on the barrel. Very few of the engraved 1899's had engraving on the barrel.

Good catch on the bolt.

The animals don't match the rest of the engraving. I think it might have looked better without them.

Checkering is fantastic..

I would contact zBobby Taylor and see if one of his engravers could do it. I had him do my ROA and it came out beautifully. It is probably not deep enough but I would think one of them could do it. Mine was done by Rocky Sharp
