Where do you guys find win. 70 pre-64parts? I need a bolt release spring detent of all thinks. How hard will it be to just make one if I have too. Does anybody know where to see a picture of one so I can see what they look like and try to duplicate it. And how much would you estimate a price nowdays to rebore a old barrel from 30-06 to 35 whelen.

I just go to my old gunsmith for parts, if need be, but I realize most are not that lucky. For the rebore to 35 Whelen, I'd check out Jes. They are right around $300.00, I believe.
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Guys thank you so much this info is just what I was looking for bigtime! I figured about right on the rebore but forgot to ask if I find a clean 70 barrel in great shape what's the rate to just unscrew the old one off and install another like say 30-06 switched to 270 both original pre-64 barrels.

Chances are excellent that your barrel will just screw on. Just had this conversation with a gunsmith, Ted indicated that he’s never had pre64 barrel fail to index or headspace correctly on a pre64 receiver and added the same holds true with M54 barrels on M70 receivers and vice versa.

My smith said he's had the best luck with same era/decade barrels on same decade receivers. IE: 1950's barrels on 1950's receivers, etc. etc. He said they are usually within a few thousands. He will finish ream to make them headspace perfectly. That reminds me, I have a real nice short (21") barrel with front sight from 1954, that I always think would make a good handy 35 whelen or something like that. it's a 30-06 right now. As for price to install a barrel. I don't know. My smith always charged me $40.00. That is almost like nothing, but he's a friend too. Other prices may vary.

Yes bolt release on the left side you push it down with left thumb and pull the whole bolt straight back and out with your right hand. I still have the spring sticking out but local gunsmith said the detent tidbit that fits between the little spring push down lever is missing...he called it a "detent". He said it was like a little nipple on one end that goes into the little spring.I have never seen one before.I need one. Thanks

The pre64.com website small parts pages show photos and quote $5.99 each for the bolt stop release plunger and the plunger spring. The same page mentions that very early rifles take a jumbo size (and jumbo $). I buy from them from time to time and have found them very helpful.
