I know the case on the 44-40 is slightly longer by 0.020", but if the chamber was long enough could the 44-40 fit in a 44 magnum. Also the bullet for the 44-40 is 0.002 smaller on the 44-40, but that shouldn't be a big problem?
Just wondering why the 44 mag wasn't designed slightly longer to take the 44-40 as well as the 44 special rounds.

The 44/40 is not a straight wall case . It has a slight bottle neck . Why would you want to fire a 44/40 out of a 44 Mag cylinder ? The 44/40 and the 44 Mag have two different rim diameters and the 44/40s case is wider. It would not fit.

It is always best to only fire ammo that is designated for the firearm. Besides that, the 44-40 cartridge is harder to find and typically more expensive than the 44 mag. Firing 44-40 in a 44 mag makes no sense.

I buy some cast bullets from an outfit in MT.
They size their 44 40 bullets smaller than their other 44 bullets.

The .44-40 case is .013" larger in diameter at the base than the .44 mag. Good luck getting it to chamber.
Some revolvers, notably Rugers, came with both a .44 Magnum and .44-40 cylinder. Most of these however had a .429-.430" bore.

If it will chamber, it should work.

If you really want to do it, buy another cylinder and have it chambered to .44-40.
Better yet, buy an Uberti SAA clone.
