Buddy of mine has an original Win. "low wall" in 22RF. Bull barrel, spirit front sight, rear micrometer sights. He used to give us all the willies at club field days with that thing, breaking eggs at 100 yards, offhand. Most of had our hands full trying to break an egg with scoped sporter 22s.
We recently finished our outdoor centerfire sporter rifle 3 position matches and they're working on an indoor 22 sporter match for this winter. Either NRA or CMP regs, but I don't know enough about which is which yet. Bound to be fun, regardless.
Smallest group I've ever fired with a sporter 22 at 100 yards, was five into less than an inch, rested. That was with a Win. M320 that had an old Weaver K2.5 on it at the time. Musta been a fluke, 'cause the same rifle with a Weaver V12 on it, will only do about an inch and a half now. Then again, maybe it's the ammo or operator error? ;o)
If three or more people think you're a dimwit, chances are at least one of them is right.

You guys have got me interested. Have a Sako FinnFire 22LR. Gotta get out with some match ammo and see what it will do at 100 yards. Virgil B.

My son also has a Finnfire, and it too is a tack driver. He has a fondness for fine .22s, and he has been remarkably lucky with getting accuracy right out of the box. Paul

After reading this I took my custom 10/22 with me to the range last weekend, I had never shot the gun past 50 meters, so I thought I would try 100 meters. The gun was sighted in dead on at 50 meters so I had to hold real high and kinda lob them in.
Off a rest, sand bags, the gun will shoot just under 2 inches, I have not measured the group but I was impressed. I plan on adjusting the scope for 100 meters and really seeing how well it will shoot at that range.

I have shot my Anschutz 64 MPR at 200, but I run out of elevation adjustment on my Leupold 6-18 with target turrets so I have to hold over. I shoot steel ducks at 150...takes all 77 clicks for 150 yds. using Wolf Match Extra standard velocity. It's called "getting your ducks in a row."
This combination will shoot under one inch at 100 yds. and sometimes into the .5s if there's no wind.

In 1890 Win came out with the .22WRF ,I have one with octogon barrel made in 1908.
It was the .22 MAG for about 70 years !

I shot a group at 30 yards that was .50 for 50 shots from my Sako, so I'm thinking it will do OK at 100 yards. Gotta give it a try! Virgil B.

Not to brag, but as a sharp eyed and steady kid, a single shot 22 was very deadly. I could shoot pop bottles at over a hundred yards. If I could do that, I'm sure others can do what's being claimed here.

BSA Martini model 12 with BSA #8 Micrometer peep sites. It is amazing just how accurate this 100 year old rifle can be. No wind 200 yards no problems. Less than MOA all day long.

The BSA club rifles are amazing guns. But MOA at 200 yds all day long? No way.

Bob The 22 mag was made in 1957 or so. Just curious: do you ever shoot your 1908 and what ammo do you use?

I have not shot at 200 yards for score, but have at 100 many times. I have an old BSA model 12 gallery rifle that will keep 10 inside 3/4" at 100 yards. On a good day with no wind I would guess that the rifle with its peep sites could shoot that well if I did my part.

Sounds like we need a long range 22 "po*tal" shoot. We could have yardages set for rifles and pistols. This could be fun come spring....

I can believe those groups, Heck I used to plink at 200yds with a Smith and Wesson mod. 17-2 K22 Masterpiece doubleaction revolver with iron sights. I lived on a ranch at the time, up on a hill above a little shallow spring fed creek that ran year around and had little stones sticking out of the water. I could see where every bullet hit.
You would be surprised what can be done, with ironsights and good eyes, even with a 6 inch revolver.

I haven't shot paper as much as some with .22's at long range, but some friends and I have tried to see how far we could kill ground squirrels and prairie dogs CONSISTENTLY with them. Most of these firearms (both handguns and rifles) are scoped, but some have good irons on them.
On relatively calm days we have been able to consistently hit Columbian ground squirrels at 200 yards (and cleanly kill them, with Winchester Power Point ammunition). These are tiny targets, especially since they are normally standing in grass, maybe 2" across at most.
Prairie dogs are bigger. We once had a "long dog" contest with rimfire .22's on a prairie dog shoot. My longest kill was 238 yards (lasered) and I came in SECOND, to a friend who got one some 20 yards farther. My all-time longest PD shot with a .22 Long Rifle was 275. And yes, Power Points still expand at that range. I have also taken ground sqwuirrels and prairie dogs out to around 150 yards with a .22 Long Rifle handgun, a scoped Ruger Mark II slabside.
During our long dog contest, the longest shot with a .22 Magnum was almost 350 yards.
You don't know how far you can hit stuff unless you pull the trigger and see.
