I bought Mule deer’s 257 rifle from him a while back. I bought an 80 acre clear cut against my property.
On my property my shots have been limited to 250 to 300 yards max.
My question on the clear cut is been cut now and it is flat and open from one end to the other. I have been using the Hornady +p 117 grain SST load. I have got some H 100V and TTSX bullets to load to dirtfarmers little buzz saw loads. I have got H4350 and IMR 4350 and a few boxes of 115 BT.
My question for your experienced 257 hunters is which bullet would you use for the longer ranges I could be shooting on white tail deer out to 400 yards? I am thinking about terminal performance of bullet on deer up to 220 LBS.

You cant go wrong the the TTSX. But, the Hornady will work as well. 115 BT will put meat in the freezer also. 257 Roberts 120 grain bullets are not likely to run much over 2850 FPS. That makes about any good cup-core bullet work fine.

Whatever combination shoots the best consistent groups from your rifle.

John has probably assembled some proven load for that particular rifle that will work for you.

He gave me some loads of around 1 inch and that includes the Hornady factory load. I was just thinking of the bullet performance at extended range. The heavy bullets would be staring out at around 2900 and the TTSX at around 3200FPS.

At that velocity, TTSX all season long!

What weight are your TTSX ?

These days Barnes only makes a 100-grain TTSX .25. Their 115s are flat-based, hollow-point TSXs.

In my .257 Kimber Montana I'm running the 80 grain TTSX over 4451 @ 3329 fps. I don't know that I would push them out to 400 yds but 300 and in they've worked great on Cali blacktails and hogs.

The 100 gr TTSX is a great bullet ( only use it in the 257 Wby) , but don’t worry about the 115 Ballistic Tip it will get job done. I have shot that bullet through many deer and hogs out close to 300 and wouldn’t think twice about going to 400.

Barnes has 80gr TTSX bullets for the 25 caliber.

Not a heck of a lot of 257 kills on my part but so far the 120grain Speer SPBT is well suited to deer shooting. I push it to 2800 fps. 400 yards is farther than I like to shoot at deer. Not saying it isn't ethical just that I like to get closer.

i do like Hammer bullets but you need to know your rifle`s twist , in my grandson`s Ruger #1 the barrel has a slow twist so we loaded 75 gr. Hammer hunter bullets with Reloader 17 this Ruger #1 shoots very good and does have less recoil too. after this season i will know much more about the 75gr Hammer bullets . i do know in my Ruger #1 257 Weatherby mag. 103 gr. Hammer hunter bullets work well on antelope ,deer including a buck that dressed 193 lbs., also these 103 gr. Hammer hunter bullets shot well in this Ruger #1 257 Weatherby mag . that has a 10 twist , in my Remington 30 Express 257 Roberts custom Brux barrel 8 twist shot great also. good luck with your choices,Pete53

You're right. They didn't make 'em for a little while during the peak of the "shortage."

It is easy enough to get the 115 NBT to 3000+ fps with Hybrid 100V and a 24" barrel.

I'm using WW+P 173gr brass, Hybrid 100V, Fed 210M, @ 2.895 coal. 24" Savage barrel.

I was concerned that at 257 Roberts velocity the TTSX at that distance might not have the velocity to open up. I have never used any bullet on game except cup and core.

Any other hunters have experience with TTSX 100 grain at long distance?

They work fine out to at least 400 yards.

Eileen also crumpled a cow elk with one, but that was at only 123 yards.

I’m going with the .257 101 grain Barnes LRX this season. I could only drive them to around 3000 fps in my .257 Rob. Kimber Montana before the groups opened up. That’s with 46 grains of IMR 4350.

100 gr Nosler prt - 47gr H4350 - Norma brass - Never shot a
deer much past 250yds. This load works from 7 to 250 yards
though. I believe that all bullets mentioned above will work
if placed "in the boiler room."

I have been quite happy with the 100 gr. Hornady SP at about 3000 fps from my .257 Rbts
