Ed Zern penned a piece that had everyone convinced that Ted was just made up, because he didn’t appear in pictures and was just too perfect. He even riffed on his name as being made up. Fooled a bunch of readers with that one.
Russell Chatham wrote an excellent piece about living in west Marin and fishing for steelhead and shad in the Russian River (Sonoma county, not Alaska) and trying desperately to meet his idol Ted Trueblood. It was an excellent story that had a perfect literary ending.

I always liked Jim Carmichael a lot. His articles were the first I went to when my Outdoor Life came. I remember when he first took over for O’Conner. I was 15. Where the hell did the years go?
