Or similar 35+ caliber. I need something along with the straight wall case for my offspring to gun hunt with in Iowa. She's a girl so she gets to use a rifle..has to be above 35 cal tho, per regs.

A 358 Win is not a straight walled case.

Find you a 350 legend. They have worked for me at reasonable ranges. Lots of different rifles out there to choose from . Wish her luck for me.

Is the 358 or 356 win legal in Iowa now?

It doesn't need to be straight walled in Iowa but does need to be .35 or larger.

350 Legend is everywhere on shelves. 35Rem ammo is finally back to a decent degree.
Now with even more aplomb

What is everyone's love for a 350 legend all about? They are junk compared to the 450. Hunted and seen the performance first hand and side by side. I am in iowa and use a whelen.

Low recoil for a youth. Availability of guns and ammo. 450 is obviously superior but recoil is alot depending on age/size of the kid. same with your whelen. Read OP

358 win is a pretty decent recoil. It always surprises me compared to a 308. Depending on size/age of your kid I would also lean to the 350 legend or pick up a Ruger 77/357. That is a very low recoil round and plenty good on deer at 100 and under

What about a 35Rem Marlin lever... not too hard to find one. Recoil is great for young one and plenty of energy out to 150-200yds.

I have a M88 in 358 and the recoil is much like that of a 30-06. Notable, but still tolerable. I have a 350 Legend on an AR platform and it puts deer down much like my grandfather's 336A in 35 Remington. Don't underestimate the 357 Mag in a rifle such as a Marlin 1894 if the ranges are modest. The 357 paired with the 180 gr Hornady XTP and Lil'Gun makes for a potent, light recoiling package.
