Got my rifle back from Chris. It looks perfect, cycles the 338 federal rounds I loaded perfectly. I couldn’t be more pleased. It was a 243 someone had put a custom stock on. I’ll get it sighted in next week at the deer lease.

Neat! Congratulations!

What's your choice of 338 Federal, over, say, the 358W about?

What bullet and OAL did You end up with?

Once fired brass is tough if you can find it. I have 50 loaded, would like to have another 50 pieces of brass.

Can't the brass be made from .308's?

I like the 200 grain AB and 210 grain Partition in the 338 FED.

i prefer the 338 FED to the 358 WIN just because. I've had a few 99s in 358, 99DL, 99F, and 99R. The recoil in the 99F was unpleasant, while the recoil in the 99R wasn't, but the 99R was a heavier/longer rifle than I wanted to carry afield. The 99DL was a better choice for me, even with a 24" barrel. All are gone, none are missed.

If I want to shoot a .358" bore lever action, I can shoot Marlins in 35 REM and 356 WIN.

I've often thought of doing the same.......great cartridge choice.....My 338 Fed does wonders on bears.

By the looks of this thread, I better count up my once fired brass as I must have a couple hundred rounds of it.

It has been rumored that the .338 has pressure problems in the 99.

Any factual info on that?

I understand it can and will if I have to, but prefer correct headstamp if possible.

I always thought a .338 Federal in a Savage 99 made a lot of sense! Good luck hunting!

Mr. Occumpaugh told me that several years ago when I contacted him about having a 99 rebored. He said that he had rebored some 99s to 338 FED and the owners were seeing high pressure signs with factory ammo. I thought that it spoke well of him to warn me before I paid him to do the work. I moved on to other things, but would consider having one of my 99Cs done if Hanco reports success/satisfaction with his.

He told me the same thing when I asked. He said that there would be no issues with the Winchester 88 though

SAAMI specs for pressure on the 338 Federal are identical to the 308 Winchester, just 1.5% less than the 7mm08.

So that's odd.

Very odd. I've got to wonder if the issue is with how they do the rebore and chambering on the 99.

Works in and 88 but not a 99???
