My Wife and I are trying to figure out a vaction spot to go to this winter. Any of you had a place that is great to go to with the kids, also w/o the kids (teens)?

We talked about cruises (maybe #1), Hawaii (Maybe #1, too), Australia (not likely this year), Minot N.D. (last), , or somewhere in the States. We need some suggestions.

New Zealand, Every $60 USA is worth $100 NZ cost of living 'bout the same Your'e winter our Summer, you could even go hunting Will probably cost ya 'bout $2000 USA return for two LAX to Auckland {out of American college vacation, period prices go up in that time} Go hiking, laze on the beaches, chase Chamois and Tahr, talk to Oscar{moosie} he was out here a few years ago.

My wife and I had a great time last spring in the Florida Keys. The lower keys offer some great fishing. Lots of touristy things to do on Key West if that suits you. The teenagers will love the beaches.

The year before we went to Puerto Rico. More great beaches and water sports. Another great place. I highly recommend the club Chico in the Hotel San Juan. From Puerto Rico you can take a shuttle to the U.S. Virgin Islands too.

Kevin,

As a fellow Oregonian, I must remind you you are not allowed to say anything good about California.

However, to the original question, San Antonio isn't too bad in the winter, though Sea World is closed.

Are you looking for a warm destination or winter sports area?

My wife and I went to Cabo San Lucas a couple years ago in January and it was great. Loved the warm beaches, low prices for lodging and food, and walking the beaches and drinking huge margaritas all day and night.

Hated the curio vendors though. Seems like we couldn't carry on even the shortest conversation without being interrupted. However, the margaritas made up for most of that. Did I mention we loved the margaritas?

If you like winter sports, or beaches and are on a budget, Oregon is a pretty good bet. The beaches can be pretty nice in the winter, if not exactly warm, and the mountain sports- skiing, snowmobiling, hiking, etc... are pretty good. Of course, being from Colorado you probably have plenty of that available already.

If you are looking at cruises, we have some very good friends that run a travel agency that specializes in cruises. It might be a little late to book a cruise for this winter, but it would be easy to check. Let me know if you're interested and I'll get the number to you. They are great to deal with, have very competitive prices, and understand the business well enough to help you with all of your travel plans. In fact, I believe they are going on a cruise in February through the Panama canal and ending in Costa Rica. Should be a great trip.- Sheitser

You should try Alaska. Winter is lots of fun, no mosquitos, fewer idiots on the road,( the idiots usually end up in the ditch early in the winter), good skiing-downhill and cross country- and some, ah hem, wonderful people.

Most of us speak American, a few English, and we all take American money; lots and lots of American money.

Try the West side of Costa Rica! Airfare is a tad more than Mexico, and the flight is a little longer, but the prices there are great and the people friendly. Fishing for sailfish, marlin, dorado and tuna is a blast there. Also available activities: scuba diving, jungle canopy tours, and river rafting.

Carnival begins sometime in early February, lots of festivities...

Depends on what you like to do. If you want to golf and ride horses, Come to Phx. It you want beaches and stuff like that, I would go to Cabo.

I went to Chile last year. It was a great trip in the middle of January. Down there the days are long and warm (high 80's) and the nights are cool (60's). There is 1200 miles of coast line and 1200 miles of Ande's mountains. It is a truly spectacular country and very stable. I spent two weeks there and it was great. They also have excellent wine that is quite reasonable too. If you want to experience a really different culture off the beaten path, I would recommend it. The exchange rate was also very favorable when I was there, about 700 pesos to the dollar. Airfare was about $1400.00 round trip but if you keep your eye out, you can find it for as low as $500.00.

A few years ago my wife and I went to Zihuatenejo, Mexico and had a great time. It is not a high-rise type developed resort, but is a fishing village on a bay with several seaside hotels. The hotels are on the small side, and vary in their price and amenities. Even though it is not a resort in the modern sense, there is still quite a tourist industry, both for vacationing Mexicans and foreigners. The big developed tourist resort with high rises, etc. is Ixtapa, which is about four miles away, so you can take a cab or even a bus so you can see how the other half lives. If you prefer the amenities of Ixtapa, you can still take in the charm of Zihuatenejo or vice-versa. There is an international airport right between the two towns, so you can fly directly from the States. We took a charter flight from Minneapolis. There are plenty of charter boats for fishing enthusiasts. When we went it was very reasonable, about $80 a night at a very nice hotel (Villas Miramar), and there are decent places that are cheaper and also some more expensive. The prices tend to fluctuate year by year. There are also condos, and a few houses, and apartment-type accomodations in private homes. We did the bookings ourselves, directly with the hotel, and you need to make reservations well in advance. Like I said, the hotels are small, and they do quite a repeat business with regulars. The restaurants are like the hotels, ranging from simple and cheap to quite pricey. We went there on the recommendation of a coworker, and were very pleased.
