The Coalition for a Clean Dan River Region appreciates the Star Tribune publication of some of the information we provided one of your reporters several months ago.
It appeared that you either failed to read the DEQ documents provided, or did not understand the significance of them. It seemed confusing for the reader to have the violations presented as my personal opinion and simple “allegations” (without proof, doubtful, or suspect).
Your “cut and paste” approach to reporting is disappointing and fails to present the facts accurately.
This very serious situation is neither new nor questionable for our community, nor are the DEQ documented violations by First Piedmont.
Did you confirm the statements of Mr. Setliff as factual? He repeated the same denials published previously by the Tribune.
All “allegations” against First Piedmont are clearly documented. A DEQ official described this as the “worst” they have seen in Va.
Blaming Covid for their operational deficiencies is almost as ludicrous as blaming Donald Trump. If anything, Covid should have made it easier for them to operate.
Again, I invite Mr. Setliff to review hazardous waste definitions and sources, ranging from industrial wastes to batteries and the many forms, including liquids, solids, gases and sludges First Piedmont advertises that they accept.
Also, Setliff claims the landfill has operated without a permit violation for 50 years until 2021. .Perhaps he was not in a position to have access to that information.
Our community observed first hand those 50 years of having First Piedmont as a neighbor.
To quote Ben Davenport in one of your previous publications:
“Sometimes it’s just as well not to know the truth. It’s convenient”
The truth is that industrial waste may pollute nearby soil and adjacent water bodies , and can contaminate groundwater (all of which FP has done)
Industrial waste is often mixed with municipal waste, making assessment difficult. Enforcement is
always an issue. This proposes a threat to public health and the environment.
Danville Transportation Director, Marc Adelman, admittedly having a “good relationship with the owner” was quoted as saying there were no present concerns related to flight paths in or out of Danville Regional Airport. and no concerns about the height of the landfill. (that is true since the September landfill fire)
But otherwise that statement is questionable. (per emails earlier this year from the Virginia Dept of Aviation to Mr. Adelman)
A good investigational reporter could find some interesting details for publication if you really want the truth.
