Sugar cane mill, horse or mule driven.

Stepmom’s dad lost three fingers on his left hand to one on the day she was born. He had a thumb and pointer finger left.

Camerawork isn't the greatest but I've shown this clip to students before. At least shows how it works.

I work with a younger guy ( to me, hes 25. )

An engineer.

He found one of those and rigged it up to run off a tractor via a gear box from a dump truck.

540 PTO to a few revs a minute.

Him, his dad and 90 something year old grand dad raise sugar cane and make syrup.

They make the light ( amber) syrup. Good tasting.

Knew right away that was a sugar cane or sorghum mill. The ones I saw in operation were horse or mule operated and the cane feed in by hand. If you’ve ever watched the movie “ Sargent York” there is a scene of one operating. The juice is squeezed out of the cane, collected in a large pan and cooked off. Smells wonderful and brings out the yellow jackets. When the juice is cooked down to the right consistency; the syrup is poured in fruit jars or tin containers like paint cans with a lid. In earlier times, this and honey were the only sweets a family had. Sorghum molasses over hot buttered cat head biscuits is fine table fare. Great in baked beans too. My grandfather poured it over his fried catfish

I'm always amazed at the depth of knowledge that is shared on the 'fire.

Many years ago I saw a similar device used to squeeze out sorghum stalks at the Mt. Pleasant Old Threshers reunion, Mt. Pleasant Iowa. I'm sure something similar is still used today. The one at the Old Threshers Reunion used a belt drive from a steam engine.

Back then the guys running the machine and feeding the sorghum into the crusher probably did it in their youth for their fathers and grandfathers. This has been 50 years ago. The Old Threshers Reunion still goes on every fall in Mt. Pleasant.
