Last time I hunted with a dot, it was a Tasco Propoint (yeah, that was a while ago). I had to pass on a shot because it was dark enough that the dot obliterated the target.
Scopes, even scopes with lit reticles, do much better in poor light IMO.

I have this exact optic on my Ruger AR15 and I love it. I have not deer hunted with it, so I can't comment on how well it works in low light, though it is illuminated, so I assume it would work great. I have been extremely impressed at the groups I have shot on the range using this gun and optic. 1"-1.5" 5 shot groups at 100 yds are the norm with cheap Hornady ammo and a 8" steel plate at 200 yard is easy to ring about as fast as I can pull the trigger. I have shot a 12" plate at 300 yards using a tripod and hit 15 out of 15 shots, once I figured out the hold over.

For $200ish it's hard to beat. The 3X works well enough for indoor range distances (100 yards or less). In the woods you still have plenty field of view. So anything from 30 to 100 yards is pretty well sorted.

I am thinking about one on the 6.8. Would be used in the woods where ranges rarely exceed 50 yards and most shots are 25 yards or closer.

Pros/Cons?
Pro - they are fast and lightweight.
Con - parallax error makes them tricky to use at longer distances (100yds plus).

Every manufacturer claims their red dot is "parallax free" and almost cases that is BS. If you can't develop a consistent cheek weld and head position you will find shooting most RDS at >100yds very frustrating.

Odd, I have a 2 MOA Holosun 407cx2 on one of my 94 Winchesters and have no problem shooting sub 2" groups over and over at 100 yards.

Pointy heads make cheek welds very repeatable.

I’ve the same dot, had it on my 06, shot a buck around 150y last year. Easy peasy.
