Hi all first time poster. What a great site !!! I have sorta of a dilema. I was considering having 2 Ed Brown rifles built, a marine sniper in 22-250 and a Savahna in 17 rem. and then would have to save up for scopes. I keep thinking for the cost of the 2 Browns I could get 2 Sako rifles and buy very nice scopes at the same time. I wont have time to play until summer, so have time to stew on this. So guys help me out, this will be a once in a life time type deal ( according to my wife) Mike

I go Sako because of the resale - they're like Toyotas.

Also they're make very well and very accurate, not to mention they cost a whole lot less than a brown.

very true.. was filing through a pards safe and found a early sako in 6ppc. it had a bolt that felt like it was trolling through hot butter. absolutely fabulous......

found a cheap tikka in 595 .270 that was really smooth. thought it would make a nice base for a 7#ish 338-06.

Good ? woofer. Im just starting out with this rifle thing. Been shooting 1911 pistols for awhile and own Ed Brown and Nighthawk, So I assumed that Ed made a decent rifle complete on his own action. As far as Sako goes I feel (in my limited knowledge) they make the best factory option. As for glass, I will be using Swaro and Schmidt and Bender. Im sparing nothing especially when the wife is giving me the green light. Mike

Its funny on the scope thing, the wife and I were looking at SWFA's website and I was showing her the scopes I wanted and she asked " whats wrong with these BSA thingys" Shes tryin hard. Mike

brown makes great stuff. i see the connection now. just perused his site. nice stuff!!

you could easily go custom off a sako action and save a grand from the brown if you truly want a custom that is your own (i like that feeling even if someone else built a similar gun to mine).

you could cut the price to $1500-1700 with a rem or winny action but it sounds like you favor the sako and those are sweet. different too. not many customs around on sako actions (because they cost more and we are cheap bastards )

if it is a one shot deal (not really but you can tell your wife that) then i would sink my cash in something you could not go out and buy any day of the week. make the purchase personal. your own..

Stay away from Ed Brown rifles. I got screwed, others on this site have also been screwed. They don't shoot as advertised, Ed tells everyone that's it the shooters fault, and they aren't worth squat on resale.

Buy the Sako.

If your limiting yourself to a Brown or Sako(with scopes)...go "Sooko"

You noted further down that you aren't too into rifles yet (bad, bad, very bad ), so for that reason only, I am committing the crime of offering another possible option. Have you looked over a Cooper repeater? A pair of M52's in a safe would be a terribly good start to a collection, or it's own collection . . .

Not that a pair of Sako's is a bad thing, either.

Another vote for the Sako rifles. Smooth actions, shoot very well, no long waits and you can actually have some resale value if you decide to change them out. I recently sold one of my older Sako M75 for exactly what I paid for the rifle. I did take a loss on the scope, but the rifles hold their value.

Thanks all. Its fun having other guys help spend your money. I have decided on the scopes. They will be Schmidt and Benders. I will be hunting woodchucks,coyotes and foxes. Sako no longer offers a 17rem. So probably go with the stainless/ laminated varmint in 204 and A Cooper classic in 17AH for foxes and plinking. Although I love the "looks" of the Ed Browns my common sense tells me for the money of the rifle alone I could have a great rifle and a great scope Maybe someday I will work my way into Ed Browns and ultra lights. I have three Coopers - a 57 in 22lr and two 21's - one in 20 VarTarg, the other in 20 tac. All are sweet shooters. I was at a local gun emporium today who is a stocking Cooper dealer and lusting over a 222 rem. It never ends....Your wife's 'one time deal" will morph into "one more time"....

What about the modern Mauser bolt actions? One in 222 might be interesting. Anybody know the quality of these rifles? Thanks, Mike

How much is the Brown, 1,700 to 2,200 ?
