I’ve been playing with these 17 HMR and 17 Mach II auto loaders for years. I can tell you that it’s not the ammunition. Some ammo is prone to having case neck cracks, but I think it was more of an accuracy problem than a case rupture. The camber gets dirty and the round doesn’t fully chamber. The gun fires and the unsupported part of the round ruptures. The only cure is to run a bore snake through the rifle every 50 or so rounds. It just takes a second. I don’t think that’s anyone is making an auto in this caliber anymore because of the problem. I’ve gotten rid of all of mine except for a Volquartsen auto in 17 Mach II and a buddy has one in a 17 HMR. Both kept clean and work great.
Agreed, the Mach 2 requires a clean chamber every 30-50 rounds to be safe in blowback actions.
Savage makes the A17. Sometimes the bore snake is not enough, a proper chamber brush is needed.
