We're going to buy a used late model vehicle and with auto thefts on the rise, I'm thinking of getting a tracking device and hiding it in the vehicle. I did a little looking and found some are powered by the car battery and some by dry cell batteries. I would want one wired to the car battery, simply because I would forget to change the batteries and I dont imagine they would last too long with the device running 24/7.
Anyone got any experience with these devices?

Set calendar on your phone for reminder to change the battery at around 10 months. If it's even a semi-pro that's stealing your whip, one of the first things they're doing is popping the hood to check/trace for the hard wired option.
Good video to show how to disable the chime inside the tag (so a thief cannot immediately locate with their phone).
Might just install a 'kill switch' like I had on another vehicle. Not really a kill switch, but you couldn't crank it unless you held the switch. Momentary closure.

I do too, but when a vehicle depreciates 10%-15% when you drive it off the lot and it is stolen 5 min. later, you will only get 85%-90% of what you just paid for the car. And, with inflation and the price of late model used cars, the depreciation is about the same as a new car.
Now, there is no guarantee that if you vehicle is stolen, it will not be wrecked and thus you will still be stuck with whatever the ins. co. will pay, but it might still be ok.

A kill switch is cheap, easily installed, reliable and they work mechanically, without batteries, for tens of years.
Not a high tech solution, but a precaution for today's realities.
I bought a fairly new Tahoe from a dealer in El Paso that had TWO alarms and a kill switch. I later had to remove one of the alarms under difficult circumstances, but the vehicle never moved without me behind the wheel.

After looking at all the options, a kill switch is probably what I'll do again.
