Currently it wears a Leupold 3x9x40 which has gone tits up. So what do folks recommend for this 308? I don’t want to go cheap or crazy expensive, say $350-$750 or so. Would prefer 1” and reasonably light weight and don’t have the need for a ton of magnification (anything over 9 or 10x isn’t necessary). And I’d consider a fixed scope if I found the right one.

A 2.5x8 Leupold would look great on it.

A Trijicon 3-9X AccuPoint with the reticle of your choosing. Light and right sized for your rifle. I have a couple, one mounted on my 375, with the green post reticle. I have yet to shoot it but Trijicon is not known for building junk.

Be wary of extended windage knobs, as the high ejection angles of NULAs cause problems.

I like mine. Glass is somewhere between a VX 3 and an Alpha brand, pretty similar to a Conquest, IME.

I like the duplex type reticle with the dot; mine is green. Dot and duplex small enough for long range shooting, bright enough for the woods.

Tube is 1"; scope is not as heavy as some scopes mentioned, maybe a tad heavier than a VX-3. Sturdy built, holds zero. Never sent one back. The Tritium can fade over time and they'll fix it for a fee. With the fiberoptic light source, that may not be necessary. The dot still lights up even when they're old.

Find an older Zeiss Conqest 3x9. Next on the list would be a 6x42 Leupold

This ^

Well balanced in weight and size for the NULA M-20. Magnification range works well for a 308 or a 284 and its derivatives. Light rifle/light scope is still a good recipe for long term durability and portability IME.
