All in all, she's the candidate from hell. She wants Gen Z to go to war for Israel,...and those that survive have to work until they're dead.

I don't know who constructed her platform. But she needs to fire them.

Oh yeah,...in between going off to war for Israel and then working until you're dead, she wants the government to spy on you in case you complain about it.

I like how someone told her to use her kids as an example. Like their positions on the board at Raytheon are going to require them to punch a clock after age 50.

Piss on this war monger and the jet she flew in on. Cutting entitlements to illegals, reforming the disability and welfare systems and stoping funding nation building would be a much more productive start.

Nikki Haley can kiss my ass. I'm 62 and have been retired for 7 years.

Just finished a can of smoked oysters and crackers for lunch in my deer stand. Don't feel the need to go back to work. I stay busy. Life is good.

Everybody wants to reduce the debt.

No one wants to do the heavy lifting.

Instead they scream: "Cut the other person's program!"

This is how Obama Ran up TRILLIONS in debt.

This is how Trump ran up TRILLIONS in debt.

This is how Biden ran up TRILLIONS even more in debt.

As Walt Kelly wrote: "We have met the enemy, and he is us"

I can’t see any difference between her positions and those of Hillary. And she is just as, if not more, unlikable.

Oh, and there is only one essential government program to the swamp, endless war.

“65 years old is way to low.” In others words as the OP said work until you’re dead.

Nobody can afford to retire on SS and Medicare anyhow. So what she really means is the government should keep taxing the hell out of you and you’re employer for SS benefits but raise the age high enough that the government gets to keep it all.

That’s the same ole neocon Republican talking points going back as far as I can remember.

SS is a schit program and should be cancelled immediately! I would vote for Haley on that one alone. Funny everyone bitching about socialism but that’s exactly what sosecurity is! If you are too stupid to invest in your own retirement; then too bad! You should have to work til you die because all you can donis subsist on what sosecurity gives you. Here’s the offramp: Those who are already retired get to keep it. 55+, yours is prorated. Anyone under 55 gets the money they contributed in an IRA of their own choosing. Frankly, you’re a fool if you are counting on SS for your retirement.

I would gladly let the government keep what I have contributed if they would just quit stealing from me. I get the privilege of paying 15.3% of my gross income because I have the audacity to actually work for myself. The government pays you less than 2% on the money you contributed. Can you imagine if I had that $ in a 401k? It would be worth multi-millions at retirement and I would actually own it. My first wife died at 43. The government is keeping every single penny of what she contributed for 20 years of her working life.

She doesn’t want to cancel SS. I’d be all on board for that. She wants to keep on taxing you and your employer but raise the age for when you can start getting it back.

A twofer for the gov. Force some people to work longer and paying more in while paying you back less of what they strong armed from you.

She has wars to fight she can’t be giving us back our “social security investment”!

She wants higher retirement age while simultaneously finding ways to lower life expectancies.

Exactly. But they’ll throw you a bone at election time and talk about how the middle class built this country.

Haley and most of the elite class that she socializes with. Love the limelight and power. They have hired help to do most of their household work and can’t imagine giving up the careers that keep them in the limelight and feeling relevant even when they’re on deaths door.

She values feeling powerful and relevant more than anything else and cannot imagine a typical person that works most of their life at a typical job, even one in an office and much less one doing physically demanding work that Lord forbid wants to retire at 65 and enjoy life.

It comes down to that and or them just wanting more money in the governments pocket.

Hinduwhore never was closer than a hundred feet to anybody who has had to bust ass for a paycheck. The .gov elites just infuriate me.

We have in our govt service sector the largest collection of thieves, pervs, ignorant, incompetent, blundering idiots ever seen in world history. They accomplish nothing that actually works, what does work they tinker with until it doesn't work, they produce nothing, they prevent nothing, they guard nothing, they have insinuated themselves into every sector of the economy, banking, education, border security, taxing, housing, healthcare, transportation, communication, farming, water, mining and petroleum, wildlife management, forestry, foreign relations (money laundering scheme) etc.... and well and truly f...ked up everything they have ever touched.

Please change my mind.

The Social Security scheme is sure enough socialism and the actuarial calculations in 1930 had the life expectancy well below 65 years. The program cannot continue for a lot of reasons. It was a Ponzi scheme from the start. I am absolutely against Ms. Haley's stand on foreign military adventures but she is absolutely correct that Social Security cannot continue to pay out to people who are going to live another 20 years. The arithmetic is clear, it is unsustainable.

A big issue with social security is the number of working people such state, county, municipal, railroad, and maybe even federal that are exempt and do not pay in.

The baby boom generation is too big and living too long and produced too few children. Another thing that needs to be addressed is wealthy people drawing $5000 or more per couple. Means testing might be in order.

Tell me some thing, flintlocke. What's YOUR solution for Social Security? The trustees of Social Security say it will go bankrupt (i.e. no benefits) in 2033 unless somehow the age for benefits is increased or (b) Social Security taxes are increased.

So pick one.

And, BTW, Haley never said, and does not think, that US troops should be committed to the Israel war against Hamas.

The solution is to return it to its original trust format. Enforce the 40 quarters rule and maybe raise it to 60 quarters. SS only available to legal US citizens and fully vests at age 67.

Uh, no she does not. In any event, Social security is insolvent and will go tits up in a few years resulting in at least a 25% cut in benefits. What is your proposal to fix that? Any reasonable solution must include some increase in retirement age, even a small one. When Social Security was conceived (1935) male life expectancy was 58 (benefits kicked in at 65). Today, average male life expectancy is 76.1 years with full benefits kicking in at 66 years and some months for most people.

Stop sending hundreds of billions of dollars around the world to finance wars would be #1. Nikki Haley won't do that, of course. She's the war party candidate.

Here is my take on it for what it’s worth anyway. 😂

I am not planning on getting anything from social security. It’ll be gone by the time I get close to retirement. We will all be working long last retirement age unless pre planning took place anyway.

Also, stop calling it an entitlement. If someone didn’t pay into SS they aren’t entitled to it!! If they did, it’s not an entitlement, it is money taken without consent, spent without consent, age of retirement screwed around with without consent. Period. I don’t need Nikki Haley to tell me it’s bankrupt. She didn’t do it. We have had a few decades of a revolving door of 535 crooks that did whatever they wanted with SS and they then wring their hands that if we don’t re-elect them the opposing party might do something with our SS. Screw em all.

The government has been claiming that for as far back as I can remember. The 1980’s at least.

They could end the program and refund us all of the money that they’ve taken in both real wages and taxes on our employers with interest but they’re not about to do that.

It was a socialist Ponzi scheme from the start. The government likes the money and the control. They’re not about to give any of it back. They just want to keep more of it. End it and refund the money (they should but won’t) or shut the [bleep] up Haley.

That's why we don't want her here in SC. Didn't vote for her when she got elected. Couldn't wait to vote her red azz out! She burned all her bridges here. She wouldn't even be able to win SC if she was gonna be a frontrunner.

Yep. They’d rather finance that Bullschitt in Ukraine and all the illegals & kneegros on Welfare than pay back the folks that actually paid taxes and social security “funding” all of their life’s.

Yes, it is a socialist ponzi scheme. But there isn't enough money to refund what you've paid in. If there was, SS wouldn't be insolvent! The question remains: how do we fix it for people who relied on the gubmint's promises?

Actually I'm not, but even if I was it would be irrelevant to the issue under discussion. Logic is simple Bristoe. Concentrate hard and you just might grasp it!

Stop sending hundreds of billions of dollars around the world to finance wars would be #1. Nikki Haley won't do that, of course. She's the war party candidate.

Yep. They’d rather finance that Bullschitt in Ukraine and all the illegals & kneegros on Welfare than pay back the folks that actually paid taxes and social security “funding” all of their life’s.

Liar....and in any event, the lie is irrelevant to the issue under discussion: what to do about SS pending insolvency and are Haley's proposals (indexing retirement age to life span, limiting benefits to extremely wealthy people and indexing benefits to inflation) reasonable?

I am 62. Started paying in to SS when I was 15. I want mine. I just signed up for it. Because these politicians who have stolen enough to be rich don't want to honor the program we have paid into for a lifetime

The life span in America is declining. If Social Security is to be indexed to live span the retirement age should be dropped--not raised.

It wouldn’t be insolvent if the government invested it rather than spending it as quick as it comes in.

At any rate that’s the government’s problem since it’s the government that forces us into it. Last I checked neither me or my employer were given the option to opt out.

The government is never going to let grandma starve on the street or turn anyone away from a hospital as long as they can take our money and print more. So means testing is B.S.

So here’s what it really comes down to. What they take from SS or Medicare after taxing the hell out of us for it they’ll keep, and run up more debt and government control under other welfare programs.

Frick that [bleep]. They can do all of that when they eliminate all foreign aid, food stamps, bullschit pork barrel spending, and everything else. If you steal money from productive people under false pretenses, you should be taken out and shot.

It’s far from declining below the life span when SS started.
I don’t have the answer, but I wish it would be phased out over time and let people save for their retirement, and keep the govt out of it. The govt has proven that they cannot manage SS and many other things.

Whoever is writing Nikki Haley's talking points should be fired.

If I was a young person I'd be all for ending Social Security. But Haley's not talking about ending Social Security. She wants everybody to keep paying into it and the Fed Gov not paying as much out.

That's not going to be a vote getter.

Yeah,..well, Nikki Haley's team knows that the Social Security situation is a stinker with the young people,..as it should be. But the young people want it ended. They don't want to keep paying into it and having to work longer until they get any of it back.

Her talking points people think it's going to be a *plus* with the young people to attack Social Security.

But what's she's proposing isn't an attack on Social Security. It's an attack on the young people who are paying into Social Security.

As Elon Musk said, "She can stop pretending to run for President now".

The government has been claiming that for as far back as I can remember. The 1980’s at least.

They could end the program and refund us all of the money that they’ve taken in both real wages and taxes on our employers with interest but they’re not about to do that.

The problem is the money all of us have paid into Social Security has already been spent - as you said, a socialist Ponzi scheme. FICA (Social Security) taxes go into the federal government's general revenue stream with all other federal tax revenues, and it has been that way for at least 25 years. Your FICA taxes don't fund Social Security - they're just another tax. It's all a scam, and always has been.

The only way to keep Social Security going for people who have already retired is to raise future eligibility age and probably also cut future benefits.

My first check showed up today... I can't believe how excited I am..... I am finally beginning to understand why the the cucks so love their entitlement checks... woohoo
I am going to change my voter registration to Democrat..... when hell freezes over...
Thing is, it's no entitlement, I was self employed, so I paid 15%, the return will be pathetic..... I now have a little beer money though... smile

No. They can keep it going just like they keep everything else going. The Federal Reserve will just print the money and pass it around.

The Federal Reserve will continue to print money for everything that benefits the useless elites who control and feed off of the country. But they want to stop printing money for the producers who built this country.

That approach is going to bankrupt the whole country, not just Social Security, within the next 30 years. Our federal government's finances are already a house of cards. Our federal debt to GDP ratio is way past the dangerous threshold, and our enemies know it. Lots of people in this country are going to starve to death, die of very curable infections, and get murdered for small morsels of food and what's now considered small amounts of money.

Yeah. My point is, they're going to bankrupt the country regardless of what they do with Social Security.

The U.S.A. is 34 trillion dollars in debt. It's not from Social Security.

Mostly it's from feeding the U.S.A. war machine.

The biggest head scratcher to me is that when SS was created in its current form .gov was printing money and “creating” jobs out of thin air. But with SS it was the current working generation is paying in to fund it now and will reap the benefits when they retire and the new young workers begin funding it.

Seems like if they would have printed the money necessary to get off the ground and everyone only collect what they paid in it would have remained solvent. At least longer. That is assuming that congress would’ve stayed out of it.

You forgot the part about too many young people not working.
Lol.
You are right about too many unproductive young people.

There seems to be a prevalent idea here among quite a few that they have payed into their SS retirement and therefore are tapping into what they paid in. Bad news, SS was set up on the premise that each generation would fund their parents generations benefits, so your money is gone. It was paid to the generation before you. Now you are at the mercy of the generation of your children's and grandchildren's generation and their willingness to finance you. So far they haven't been able to outvote you and mostly Democrats have trotted out the SS and Medicare scare enough to keep SS going so far.

As stated earlier, when SS was started the life expectancy was less than 65 years so most people paid in and never collected. Now the average lifespan is in the late 70s but if you make it to 65 then you are likely to make 20 more years which is a recipe for disaster. So no question, SS is headed for insolvency and as us boomers die off and the next generations see they aren't going to collect it SS is liable to be in big political trouble for financing.

Anyway, all this is to say you have not paid anything into your SS retirement, the coming generation is on the hook for that. Unless they nix that idea.

The Federal Reserve will continue to print money for everything that benefits the elite even if they shut down Social Security today.

Social Security is no more insolvent than everything else the Fed Gov finances with money printed by the Federal Reserve. The whole country is insolvent. That's why it has run up a 34 trillion dollar debt.

The U.S.A. has been financed by debt for quite some time.

The national debt really started cranking in the year 2000. It was 5.6 trillion dollars in 2000. 23 years later it's 34 trillion dollars.

Let’s balance the phuqing budget and get rid of the two trillion dollar yearly deficit we are running. Then perhaps, some might be more receptive to discussing the need to do something with Social Security. But as Bristoe says, that ain’t on the agenda.

I mean, it’s mostly old working class and middle class white people who care about Social Security anyway. Nobody cares much about them.

Young people should be who cares if they raise the age to collect Social Security. As mentioned, Haley isn't proposing to eliminate Social Security. She plans on keeping it and giving less back.

About 5 trillion dollars has been added to the national debt just during the Biden administration--and--as mentioned, the TOTAL national debt was just 5.6 trillion dollars in the year 2000.

That's why a loaf of bread costs $4 all of a sudden.

The Fed Gov is stealing the value out of your money via inflation--caused by the Federal Reserve dumping trillions of dollars into circulation in a very short period of time.

Are you aware that Donald Trump is the biggest deficit spender in history ($7.8 trillion) and not a peep of complaint from you? Course, Biden is hot on his heels. Its a major, major problem but what's sauce for the goose must also be for the gander. Recall too that Trump recently promised to have the federal government build 7 megacities complete with flying cars! Where does the Constitution empower the gubmint to do that??

Seems like every other politician on the hill is now attacking Social Security. Not surprised to see Nikki do it. Heck, even Ron DeSantis did it.

I've only collected for a few years, so have not gotten even remotely close to what I paid in. And truth be known, I (all of us) could have made a lot more money investing on my (our) own. That's not even considering real estate Investments that are at a 500-600% return now, if using traditional measurement methods. In reality, the return on no money down real estate Investments is infinite, with them throwing off income into Infinity.

IMHO, Social Security has always been nothing more than a government theft and Ponzi scheme.

Fubs, I agree that they cheat so well now, there's no need to compete for votes. Goodness sakes, look at Basement Biden. 81 million votes? Yeah right.

Average to below average wage earners get more out of social security than they put in. Above average wage earners put in more than they get out.

Pretty much like anything else, the above average paying the way.

Well, no. The dollar they paid in 45 years ago would buy a lot more than the dollar they're getting back today.

Do you really think any high level politicians or business owners think different?
If you aren't perceived to be on their level, you are an asset.

Backhoes, trucks, factory equipment...are assets.
Business buys them uses them until they are dead, then discards them.
In some circumstances assets become obsolete, or used to the point of not
being efficient. At that point it is discarded, and they don't keep sending it money for fuel or maintenance.

That's exactly how middle class and below is perceived.

The elderly unproductive population of the U.S. (and many other countries) has become a huge and very expensive problem.

There are way too many able bodied or somewhat able bodied citizens in their 60s and 70s not working but they are consuming like crazy at the expense of the younger and future generations.

It is a problem compounded by them still voting and the ease with which Liberal politicians can scare them just by mentioning government shutdown and telling them that the conservative boogeyman will starve them.

Raising the SS benefit age immediately and doing away with all the exempt non-payers would help but to save SS it would have had to been done years ago.

and fwiw you have to spend money to make money. Had Trump been in another term and his policy changes carried on for at least some amount of years, I am pretty sure things would have turned. They already were. But the first days of fjb in office raped so many good things...

not defending trump as much as pointing out spending is a given. its what you use it for that matters. Whether it will get worse or get better as results. One things is for sure, spending under a liberal regime will only net further losses for sure.

Indy, Although I kept my phone line open, Unca Sugar never called me, so I just had to vote for the least harmful candidate for the last 60 yrs.
I think we can agree, there never was a SS 'fund' per se. It was paid in....and it was paid out, for many years it earned more than it paid. Money is fungible though, and the money coming in was too tempting to congress, they had to spend it...anywhere. So they did, oh boy, did they ever. Vietnam in today's dollars cost a trillion, the dick measuring contest with the USSR called NASA gobbled endlessly, the LBJ Great Society giveaway, and the big one...foreign aid...an endless river of money flowing outward (Israel historically number 1 recipient).
The 4 things mentioned here, all have one glaring trait...they brought NOTHING back into the treasury. At least our SS contributions puts something back in...and why does SS have to pay it's way? Space fun doesn't, war fun doesn't, social programs giveaways doesn't, foreign aid doesn't.
I don't have a solution for SS solvency, unless some congressmen decide the US is giving too much away with no hope of return.

Parents didn’t spend it, your government stole from it and mismanaged it, just as they do with all monies collected from taxpayers.

no one has brought up, the welfare system within this thread.

SS is something that people have paid into from taxes on their for 40 years or more.
Last I saw from the GAO, 45% of working age adults are working and paying taxes. 55% just collect welfare for sitting on their asses and doing nothing.... Getting high is their only day to day accomplishment.

While everyone that complains Social Security is bankrupting our nation, no one seemed to complain that the Welfare Disneyland the DNCC champions to get votes. That is taking more out of the money the Federal Government spends, than Social Security. We pay money to people who contribute NOTHING to Society, their entire lives. The only contribution these bums ever pay to society, is when they overdose themselves. We can quit paying that one, to fund his life time of doing nothing but collect off of someone else's labors.

And I am sure this area is no different than anywhere else in the country. Its the dumb and lazy ones that only collect ONE welfare check a week. Plenty of people around here, are smart enough to figure out the system, where they get multiple checks a week, just under different aliases. Our local Welfare offices will even council you on "how to maximize your benefits', on what programs would pay you the most money each week or month.

Typical DemocRATS, create social problems, and then we have to employ them to manage them for the rest of us, as we pay oothers to stay at home and spend their days, getting high, watching TV and just getting fatter and lazier. I know more than a couple of 30 year old kids, who have never worked and have been on the welfare rolls since they turned 18.

In this area, the big scam, is people work a job in So Cal or the Bay Area for say 4 to 6 months. They work a job they are guaranteed to 'get laid off'. They go on the welfare rolls. Then immediately come to Northern CA on the Oregon State Line.
The file for benefits under several aliases with different addresses and collect multiple checks a week.

Then they cross into Oregon and go on welfare because they had a job offer here and then it evaporated once they got here.
So they milk Oregon for welfare benefits under multiple Identities and addresses weekly or monthly. They do that at the same time they are doing it across the line in California. OR they can stretch it out longer, by milking California for 36 months and then cross into Oregon and milk it for 24 months, before it runs out. Once again under multiple identities and addresses. California and Oregon don't track, much less share information to stop this BS social theft. They are both ran by DemocRATS.

so people can milk this for 3 year or 5 years, depending on how they manage it all. Then they run thru it, go bad down to LA or SF areas, get a job for 6 months and start the entire cycle over again.

But lets don't accuse many of these people of never working a day in their lives. In this little corner of the world, while they milk the welfare system in two states under multiple Identities and Addresses, the Smarter and NOT so LAZY ones, go out and get self employed in the Recreational Phamaceutical Industry, by not registering their grows. Why should they?, there is millions of square miles of Federal Forest Land, BLM Land, plenty of water. Just use Uncle Sam's property, and if they actually do get raided, no one knows who the grow belongs to, do they?

And Why NOT? Juan and Jose, up here from the Mexican Cartels are doing it all over the place. Do your manufacturing in the base of where your market is, you don't incur shipping costs, and that is where they catch a lot of people transporting illegal drugs, People who are just the mules. The courts do the catch and release on "foreign nationals" all day long...with the never ending "this is the last time!".... sure it is...

Believe me, these people doing the welfare abuse under multiple names, within multiple states, and then spending all of their time in the "Recreational Pharmaceutical Industries", they have more cash than anyone else who is working a job , and paying taxes, that go right to these same people via Welfare Abuse.

And lets not forget, these same people don't pay any state or the Federal Government, taxes on one penny they are getting from all of these activities.

Ever see someone who looks like a transient, smells like a dead cow, looks like they haven't had a bath in years, and wearing rags for clothes, get out of a Tesla in the Walmart Parking lot, or getting their vehicle charged up? its more common than ya think around here... most folks just don't look close enough.

Social Security is small potatoes to this welfare abuse. Anyone doesn't realize that?

Look around you.. pay attention, you see it all over the place around here.

If a 65 year old is expected to live almost 20 more years how can a government afford to finance over 20 % of the highest maintenance portion of the population while they are idle and consuming the lion's share of the resources?

Nikki Haley is correct to raise this issue but her remedy does not go far enough.

For the record I'm 71 and still earning income on which I pay taxes, my bride is 67 an still working about 60 hours a week as an RN-NP. She goes out the door about 7:15AM and comes back after dark.

That is exactly how SS started out. It was meant to keep the elderly and disabled alive and fed not to completely support them.

It was a bad idea from the start, due to its tendency to create the perverse incentive of not saving adequately for retirement, but millions have already participated under the terms of the agreement and therefore have a right to collect. The vast majority of Federal Government spending in on corruption and waste. Fund SS payouts by eliminating that.

The Government isn’t paying for this, those that worked and invested into their SS account are receiving benefits from their investments.

Think about this.

The government takes 6.2% of your income and “invests” it into SS.

The Government also takes another 6.2% from your employer and “ invests “ it into SS.

Do some math and calculate how much you would have in a private or company sponsored Retirement account if you invested 12.4% of your biweekly income for 45+ years.

The SS system has been a scam right from the get go and is part and parcel to a Fed govt that steps outside its constitutionally mandated bounds. The fact you would suggest that if normal citizens don’t have a solution they should STFU about it shows you and Nikki are equally retarded despots who care not one lick for overlords in DC living up to the promises they make that they have a solution for everything if we just send them enough money.

How exactly do you know what she thinks about Israel?

Based upon what she does and says I don’t think it’s unreasonable to believe she wouldn’t send US troops to support Israel if they “needed” it.

Everything she says suggests she would do darn near anything for Israel. She actually seems much more passionate about Israel, its citizens, and its border sovereignty, that Americans and America.

Nikki Haley is a Republican Hillary Clinton. They’re both perfect cases for why we all should pray we never have a female President.

Parents didn’t spend it, your government stole from it and mismanaged it, just as they do with all monies collected from taxpayers.

There is no fund.

The Fed Gov will continue pulling funds out of paychecks forever. Your kids won't be able to get any back until age 72. Hell,...*you* probably won't be able to draw any until age 67.

But the Fed Gov will *never* stop taking money out of paychecks in the guise of Social Security.

It's just a camouflaged income tax.

No, the parents didn't steal it. Their representatives in Congress and the Senate stole it when they made it part of and accessible via general funding.

If a 65 year old is expected to live almost 20 more years how can a government afford to finance over 20 % of the highest maintenance portion of the population while they are idle and consuming the lion's share of the resources?

Nikki Haley is correct to raise this issue but her remedy does not go far enough.

For the record I'm 71 and still earning income on which I pay taxes, my bride is 67 a still working about 60 hours a week as an RN-NP. She goes out the door about 7:15AM and comes back after dark.

One more time. Your money was not for you. It was for the elderly and disabled that were being paid during your working lifetime. Your money is GONE. In theory the next generation after you pays you. SS has become something it was not intended to be. You weren't supposed to be able to move to a Florida trailer park and soak up money and medical care for 20 years. So, as usual the U.S. government has gotten off into something and screwed it up.

Yes, it would only be fair that you collect a SS payment since you payed your parents generation but the younger generation is beginning to rebel about pouring their money into supporting a large high maintenance bunch of people with taxes and devalued money. I don't blame them.

You are correct if that SSI program is paid out of SS. I had a neighbor boy that collected it from age 18 until the sheriff came out and killed him at age 50.He weighed at least 400 and got a crazy check. On our dime he had a vehicle to drive, a 4 wheel ATV, and his 70 year old mother would cook him a stack of pork chops every day while he terrorized the neighborhood with rifle fire.

There are millions and millions getting those SSI checks, and a bunch of them are "crazy checks". And free phones too.

This is a good part of the reason the younger working generation are miffed about paying when they know they won't get it when their time comes.

As I said, mismanaged, fraud and theft, are what depleted SS, not those that paid into it.

I agree with all of this the crap the underfunded the stop ssi
Id LOVE to stop paying in(im56) and invest that money myself, problem is the government would just find another way to tax your income. They cant live the way they do without pour tax money and will never stop until we stop paying taxes. Unfortunately i cant be self employed yet due to healthcare and my nice paychecks so i am stuck paying axes for a few years yet

By listening to Republicans? The new speaker of the house authored a budget to raise the age for social security back in 2020. If and when it happens, it will be done by republicans. I am going to have contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars into the system and they don't want to give any back. They are hoping I die before I have a chance to collect.

This should be easy then, just stop taking in taxes and freeze benefits.

Sure, 90% of SS’s income was from taxes last year and only about 6% was from growth but it’ll all be ok I’m sure.

I can't disagree with anything you just posted. I'm afraid the Congress will just do nothing and then print some money to make up the shortfall. That will create more inflation, of course. Personally, I think they should make up the shortfall by cutting welfare but that will never happen. I also think they should raise the retirement age. That will never happen either. The original thought behind SS was to provide a cushion for those few people who lived beyond 65. They never intended to give everyone a 25 year or 30 year retirement but that's what a lot of people expect.

Don't blame me. I voted for Trump.

Get rid of SS and let people invest it in private retirement accounts. Then people can retire when ever they F'in like. Hell I would have retired at least 10 years earlier if I could have invested all the money taken from me and put into SS.

Sad truth is that no pol is going to advocate for that as it would be instant political suicide.

That's fine.

It doesn't change the fact that your SS dollars are gone.

That's what happens when you throw your money in the big pot that is marked General Fund.

What about those of us who are nearing retirement and have been contributing into the system for decades? If they are willing to write me a check for what I have contributed, I am more than willing to go along with that. They don't even have to pay me interest on it.

It needs to be phased out. Give those of us retired or close to it choices on how or if to get paid out. Those that are just beginning to work should be able to redirect the funds to IRAs and never be forced into SS. Those in the middle of careers would get cashed out.

But it's a Ponzi scheme. Not sure how you'd unravel it in a 'fair' way as all the money is mostly already gone. If they create 'new' money to pay out it would be inflationary.

Everyone would be shocked how little would be available if they cashed it out based on current payout schedules vs. what they payed in.

But I'd love to see some proposals.

The country is 34 trillion dollars in debt. The Federal Reserve is creating "new" money as hard as they can without throwing a bearing in the printing press.

It all goes into the same Fed Gov pot first so Fed Gov can spend it before inflation hits it.

All this talk about cutting Social Security is just an attempt from Fed Gov to put more of the Federal Reserve's money into their pet projects instead of allowing rank and file citizens to get their piece of the pie.

I don’t want to hear any bullschit about something being “inflationary” or Social Security going “bankrupt” when the funds are placed in the general fund and we are running a $2 trillion a year deficit.

Cut a couple aircraft carries. Cut some overseas military bases. Cut foreign aid. Cut welfare spending. Cut boondoggle federal programs. Cut government payrolls. Cut Congressional salaries.

Do all of that and more before you come to the people from whom you stole money for their entire working lives under the pretense that they would receive some of it back in old age and ask them to take a cut. It doesn’t matter whether I need it or not. It was mine and you stole it.

Do all of that and more before you come to the people from whom you stole money for their entire working lives under the pretense that they would receive some of it back in old age and ask them to take a cut. It doesn’t matter whether I need it or not. It was mine and you stole it.

Cut me a tax free lump sum check for everything I’ve paid in on FICA plus 6% per annum and you can do whatever you want with Social Security.

That nation building and Arab spring sure worked out nicely didn't it? We would have been trillions (many trillions) ahead if Kaddafi and Saddam were still there. Kaddafi had started behaving and Saddam had whipped Iran. Those people are not going to become nice people ever. Now we are completely broke and there is as much bad stuff going on over there and elsewhere as there ever was, actually more.

And did I mention the TRILLIONS of $$$$?

Cut the military????? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We'll all die!!!!!!!!!!!! Our enemies (that we have purposefully made for ourselves) will take advantage of our "weakness"!!!!!

Even though the us Government spends more on the military every year than something like the next fifteen nations COMBINED. And that's just "on the books" stuff. The pentagon actually spends WAY more than that.

I agree 100% as far as killing Saddam and toppling Iraq was trillions down the hole and a massive strategic mistake for true US interest.

Saddam was a disgusting human being but as you said he had Iran whipped. Saddam was an Iran hating secularist at his core that paid lip service to Islam in a part of the world full of Islamic zealots. Iran’s a problem today mostly because we destroyed Iraq. Saddam pretty well kept Iran under his thumb.

(Didn't read the whole thread so this may have been mentioned. Even so it bears repeating)

What about those of us who are nearing retirement and have been contributing into the system for decades? If they are willing to write me a check for what I have contributed, I am more than willing to go along with that. They don't even have to pay me interest on it.

I can completely foresee a “prorated” system in which those they paid in AND set up their own retirement accounts (IRAs, 401k, etc) will be told they can live on what they saved and those that had to slum it at minimum wage and couldn’t save for retirement will get a SS check.

It’s not like I had a choice on whether to have it taken without my consent. I’d be crazy to think any of the crooks in DC gave a rat’s behind what I think now.

I'm a bit sympathetic to those who never got paid much. This area is low wage,
and there are some very low wage years in my history.

0 sympathy to those who weren't full time employed, or those who didn't invest in their retirement. This country is chock full of people who made more than me, and have saved nothing.

As a factory worker, I'm currently putting more in my 401 than I've earned several
years as an adult.

Trump was actually bringing down the federal debt with tariffs on Chinese stuff. Covid and the lies the CDC and FDA gave him made him spend trillions to fight Covid and threw us further into debt. If we didn't have Covid and Trump was elected for a second term, by the end of his second term we were on par to have a balanced budget, thus no inflation. Booming economy, low unemployment. More people actually working than ever. I think Covid was a planned release by China to destroy the American economy.

in the 60's, large corporations with the aid of politicians decided that pensions were too costly of a perk and pushed 401Ks to be an alternative where they took people's pension money and pushed it into the stock market, except as we all know, it was really a mechanism that allowed them to get away from their obligation to pay retirement to people and put the burden on the individual to invest. (this also coincided with CEO pay astronomically rising in relation to the workers pay)

Those same people who have been dutifully paying into a 401K retirement system, losing or gaining money based on the policy of corrupt politicians and wall street bailouts, paid their FICA tax - a separate tax, to earn Social Security credit that would be paid out in retirement. Money they could have put into the 401K, a tax that their company also paid on their behalf, that could have gone into a Pension plan, or at a minimum, a larger contribution to the 401K. Don't change the narrative, you are assigned your own SSN number, you and your employer pay a tax for your credit earned into SSN. While your money goes into a general fund to cover current retirees, you are paying into a system that tracks your contribution in return to support your entitled payout. Remember the letters you used to get from social security saying this is your payout at retirement given your current rate of taxation?

so my take is, anyone who says someone shouldn't rely on Social Security, or even considers means based payouts is telling Americans, yes you did what you were supposed to do, but due to corrupt politicians and wall street brokers, and due to a large number of Americans not paying anything in , and due to the US sending money to foreign countries and immigrants, you , Joe Middle Class taxpayer, has to work longer and receive less.

As a representative of Joe Taxpayer, I think you can pretty easily guess what my response would be to anyone suggesting a reduction or means based evaluation on the Social Security I am supposed to receive when I get to retirement age.

I can understand raising the retirement age , especially as boomers retire and there are opportunities to remain meaningfully employed into your later years, but a reduction of money when you retire because you did what you were supposed to do?

Can't go with that line of thinking.

That chart doesn't include interest on the debt. It was the third largest expenditure a few years ago. Given interest rates it's probably higher now or will be as they roll over debt.

So, in a nutshell you’re saying that the money they took from us and our employers at gunpoint (like all taxes), along with the interest it would’ve accrued, shouldn’t be kept from us just because the government is wasteful, incompetent, and corrupt?

+1

I’m getting close to burning through the “principle” and will be tapping the interest soon…..

Did they consult you(us) when the full rate age went to 67?
That's how much consideration we will get when they decide to means test.

heck, i support a means test. In theory.
SOCIAL security is a SOCIAList scheme. As such, it's no about fair.
It was about folks who could NO LONGER support themselves, and supporting them
for a few years. (Folks weren't golfing and traveling into their 80s then)

High income folks are not paying SS on every dollar earned, like we do.

That should change!

Those same folks probably shouldn't be able to recieve SS funds at a certain
point.

Unfair as hell!
(SS is unfair as hell from the beginning)

Setting those limits for eligibility is a minefield that would certainly ensnare
those it was intended to help. Which is why I think it's a good idea..that shouldn't
be implemented.

the government didn't pause the idea that companies should tie the quality of retirement to the health of the American economy by having retirement funds tied to the stock market.

At the same time they also knew that a huge percentage of Americans had little to no savings for retirement while investment firms are saying people need $500K to $1m plus to retire in America

I know the program is going broke, I know means based allocation is probably the only financial approach that makes sense, but I also know our government and they are going to decide people that have a $150K in retirement 401K should get less because there aren't that many millionaires drawing social security that will put a dent in slowing the outflow of money.

I just can't accept that you do everything you are supposed to do and then in the end, the government is going to decide the person who didn't put anything into retirement should be prioritized with money you paid into your entire life.

Great post and 100% correct. The middle east is full of animals. They need a heavy handed dictator to keep them in check. Destroying Iraq and killing Sadam was a huge mistake

It’s only stealing if Uncle Sam disapproves. Uncle Sam fully supports getting his cut from every dollar earned in the USA

Those same people who have been dutifully paying into a 401K retirement system, losing or gaining money based on the policy of corrupt politicians and wall street bailouts, paid their FICA tax - a separate tax, to earn Social Security credit that would be paid out in retirement.

The collective will support and even demand the responsible support the irresponsible.... welcome to socialist hell

The "401(k)" is so named because that was the governing section of the Revenue Act of 1978...pretty far removed from in the 60's

Amazing how blatant your class envy shines.. in post after post...

Don't mean to talk down....
How in thee hell is it hard to believe that you do everything right,
then get it shoved up you ass?

Welfare, medicaid, public housing.....
Nursing home expenses, college grants.

I'm sure I could on and on.
Others could add.

Heck, welfare rats are getting over a thou$and dollars in heating oil assistance this year. Plus crisis funds.

In every case folks who have pride and work scrimp and save, take loans, to
get by.

Meanwhile, those who freeload get free food, free medical(better than my $30k plan)
free housing, free college for their kid.

They get the same care in a nursing home that working people lose everything to pay for. And it's free.

The workers who F' away everything, qualify for great grants for their kid's education.
They get the same nursing home deal as Welfar Rats.

You have already accepted that those who freeload get preference.
That you pay for it.

If you hadn't realized this, not thought about it,
i'm sorry to have pointed it out.

If you can't see all sides, consider all possible avenues or choices,
do you really understand the stances you take?

My text makes it pretty clear I think.

Sometimes there are what appear to be easy solutions, ones that are distasteful.
Ones that will have unintended consequences. Ones that should be considered,
then discarded.

Several things for certain on SS.

It was not a retirement. It was meant to help people who couldn't work anymore.
At the time 65 was old, work was very hard, Healthcare was nothing.

Nobody ever considered so many people living so long.

It's an imposed tax, redistributing wealth.
Absolutely no part of it is fair.

Yeah, it was a terrible idea, pushed by communists. Only problem is that so many people already were forced to participate in having their money stolen from them to build up what was promised to them at age 65. Phase it out, but those who are approaching retirement or who are already retired have already calculated it into their retirement preparations.

Really shines in the next post.

Guess I envy the entitled class too!
It would be easy enough to join them if one wanted.

What I don't understand is how you feel it's OK to change the rules on age in the
middle of the game?

As before, as there is no way any of it can be "right".
It started with good intentions, we all know where that highway leads.

Think a bit.
None of it is right.
There were folks who gamed the system and got way more than they should.
Those who never collect, and their families don't either.

The rules have been changed mid-stream.
Younger folks have been paying 14% (a number foreign to older folks)
the max income number keeps changing....

It's not OKAY to make the higher income folks pay in more and not collect.
It's not okay that guys pay in for 40 years, die, and their family gets nothing.

It's a SOCIALIST policy.
Embrace that. Right there in the name, in its actions.

It's intended to screw some to benefit others.
It was never a self funded, guaranteed account.

If any big changes ever happen, I'll likely be one of those affected.
Exempted until I'm almost broke, or forced to work until I die.
Right there with KWFA, punished for doing exactly what you should.
And doing it fairly well.
