I’m not a pre 64 expert, when I bought it I was told it was a transitional model, I looked the serial number up and it was 1947 or 48 I believe. Very original rifle in good using condition, has had a rear aperture sight on it at one time That’s no longer present so there’s a little place on the stock where that was, other than that the stock is very nice with original but pad. Metal has no rust but bluing is fairly worn overall, action is great and the bore is good. Comes with a leupold m8 4x mounted. Asking $1975 shipped and insured.
I’ve hunted with this rifle a couple years and thought I might see if I could get an offer on it that would make buying another rifle I’m looking at possible. I’m sure I’ll wish I had it back at some point. Pm and I can text or email photos, thank you!

I’ve been informed the stock has been refinished at some point.

Not a transitional model. (Transition was clover leaf tang, smaller safety). Shame the stock was bubba’d. GLWS

Ok, so evidently I know know about pre 64s, didn’t really think I did, but it’s been confirmed. I was told it was a transition model but the previous owner back when I got it, didn’t matter to me if it was so I didn’t dig to deep on that fact. I did ask on another forum and a few people came up with a couple things on it that seemed like it was a transition model, at this point I don’t even remember what those things were. Also it never clicked with me about the checkering on the stock, I had several other rifles that age with similar looking stocks without checking and it never hit me that all model 70s had checkering. Sorry for not know what I had upfront.
With all that said what would a reasonable value be on a rifle like this? Still a pre 64 257 roberts that shoots good and has a good action with a leupold on it. I’m guessing I’ll be hanging on to it but still open to reasonable offers and opinions, thank you.

I would send a pm to BSA and AKwolverine. But the two holes they drilled in the rear bridge at one time devalued a pre 64 by $250 a hole probably alot more now. The stock is unfortunately worthless to any pre 64 buyer. So another 1k plus off the price. BSA will definitely know what a replacement stocks are going g for. The really only thing that rifle has going for it, it’s a chambered in 257 Roberts. If you got $1000 for it w/out scope I think you be doing pretty good. But at the end of the day probably closer to $700-$750 w/out scope. Again just my opinion I’m far from being an expert on these. That’s why I suggest contacting one the guys I mentioned.
Then STFU. The rest of your statement is superflous bullshit with no real bearing on this discussion other than to massage your own ego. Suckin' on my titties like you wanted me.

Please just keep in mind that "W" would build per spec at the time this was done. It could very well be the original stock that is on it, but is hard to tell from the photos. Big "R" would also build per spec. ......Darrel Wick

This is a tough one. If you want to extract max value list the stock and the scope separately on eBay. Somebody will buy the stock for a project. Then throw the barrelled action on GunBroker. You might end up in the arena of $600-$800 for the barrelled action and another $300 to $400 for the scope and stock on eBay.

Sometimes the parts can be worth more than the whole; I've seen where parting out is easier to max out value. IMO, that stock takes a hit the way it's been sanded down. The barreled action has value. I'd think a pre-64 action alone should be worth at least $600 or more. The scope would probably do best on E-Bay; those old M8 Leupolds have their following. Same for vintage rings and base. The butt plate and ring studs should have some value. But, it's worth what someone is willing to pay. So we'll see how it goes. I wish the seller the best. DF

AKwolverine, Buyers market . Yep, you’re right, it’s a buyer’s market right now. Timing is everything, if you put it up for sale year or two ago you would have been ahead of what the market is today, that’s not to say it won’t turn around. If you’re not in a hurry to sell it - hang on to it, otoh if you’re anxious to offload it, parting it out would be the way to go. Good luck brother

Yes, I agree with that sentiment.
It is a buyers market.

So much current interest in black rifles and tacticool gear, leaves the market for vintage steel and walnut rifles in the hands of us old farts. And our generation is dying off all too fast, eroding demand.
Demand determines price and perceived value.
