Fill me in. I'm of Scotts/Irish decent & wondered. The weather seems iffy, the food seems bland & I don't like Guinness.

Beautiful countryside to see, if the weather cooperates.

Otherwise?

Guess I'm too backward. Don't drink amber hard liquor or play golf.

Maybe I'd be better off in Poland with some fine potato vodka & a pierogi.

And then...there are the Scots themselves, aye. For a thousand years the English have skimmed off the bravest and best manhood of Scotland and sent them to far places to die at the fore of English wars. When things went to shyte for the English generals...the answer was the order, "send in the Scots". That selection and destruction of the gene pool has come home to roost in the last half century and more. What Scotland is now is a solid block of wannabe socialists, 'cradle to grave freebies' is the Scots battle cry now.
Which has nothing to do with a pleasure trip, just avoid political discussion in the bar. This from a friend that worked the North Sea platforms for several years.

Well this is a fine pickle we're in, should'a listened to Joe McCarthy and George Orwell I guess.

Flew to Inverness and drove up through the Highlands to Durness which is on Cape Wrath in 2006, to qualify the 5" guns on the USS Sullivans as well as the main guns on HMS Southampton. Dropped whatever kind of air to ground bombs the British Tornados carried too. That was awesome.

It is a neat country and they like to DRINK. Had some chick pouring some sort of liquor down my throat at a bar in Inverness. Chick's were dancing in cages and they were playing Rob Zombie. It was weird there but out in the countryside the locals were really laid back and easy going. Very conservative too.

I plan to go back for a stag or roe deer hunt at some point.

Just got back from the UK. Spend four days in Edinburgh and five in London. I actually liked Edinburgh better. We wanted to go to Aberdeen but there was a big storm that came in and shut down the railroad, which we used to get around. My dad lived in Edinburgh and Aberdeen for a couple years back in the mid-sixties so that was kind of disappointing we didn’t get there. Definitely go see Edinburgh Castle, from there walk the Royal Mile to Hollyrood house palace at the other end. Therei St Giles Cathedral along the way. Blackness Castle is about 20 miles outside of the city. There’s a couple others there too that we didn’t see. The Scottish wiskey experience. The Scottish National Gallery is a must see. We had to stop by the Elephant House and George Heriot’s School - wife is kind of into Harry Potter. The girls had to see the Scottish cows so we spent the afternoon out at some farm and had lunch there - made their day. There’s more to see than you will probably have time for.

For that I am in with zest & zeal. I'd suffer a shot of scotch for a good bird hunt.

I went there twice in the 1990s for a total of 6 weeks, but that whole country has changed since then due to stupid politicians and the E.U. I like Wales really well due to the amount of castles that Edward Longshanks as well as the Normans built all over the place. I liked visiting Holy Island where Lindisfarn Castle is, and Bamburgh Castle that is close by. They are in N.E. England near the Scottish border and Hadrian's Wall and some Roman ruins and museums is in that area as well.. Edinburgh Castle is cool, but the city is a bit rough in some areas. The way that unchecked Middle Eastern immigration is taking over, I don't think I'd even to the UK these days.

We were in Oban and a few other spots this May. The seafood surprised me, it was excellent. Scallops, haddock, oysters. There are a couple of seafood stands on the wharf in Oban where you eat outside, not to be missed. We also stayed in Edinburgh and Glasgow several days each, walked everywhere and never felt out of place.

You generally won’t hear me say don’t go and explore the world…..I think Scotland would be a good time. I’ve never been but I hope to remedy that eventually. Let us know how it goes. 👍🏼

I’ve always enjoyed my time in England and Ireland but I fear that my thoughts are of times long gone and the England of today would not appeal to me. Scotland however I think is still probably worth the effort. Good luck.

from 63 to June of 66, Family lived in the UK. when my dad was stationed at RAF Alconbury in Huntingdonshire.

We traveled and saw a lot of places in 3 years of living there, and so many were places I loved going to over and over.
BUT my favorite of all was when we went to Scotland. Loved Scotland and the people there the most of all of anything in Britain. Attended the Edinburgh Flower Festival each spring... that was the best... 4 days up there.

My entire family loved Scotland, so we made many trips, and have traveled over most of it.. Even have been to Scapa Flow.

Been to Scotland many times, but only a couple of times to Ireland. I'd probably would have enjoyed Ireland just as much if I had been there more times...Had many neighbors in England, that were from Scotland and Ireland. Most were professors at the Universities in Nearby Cambridge. Lot of Aussies and Kiwis in the neighborhood also, who taught at Cambridge.

Very partial to a REAL Scottish Accent. Takes a little time to get use to it... There are a few Scottish people around town here.... when I first hear them, I have to ask where the accent is from... once they tell me Scotland or Ireland, I just shift my memory banks to the times I heard it every day.. and I'm understanding it immediately once again.

Even as a 12 year, I fantasized about marrying a redhead blue Eyed Scottish Gal, some day. Sadly that never happened...
But never lost the wish... frown

Did a huge trip in '16... spent 2 weeks in NY visiting relatives, a month in Ireland driving from the SW corner up around to the NE corner and loved every minute of it. Had expected to tolerate Ireland and love Scotland, which was the next 2 weeks. Hated Scotland and have zero desire to ever go back.

Made pub crawls nightly in Ireland and met the friendliest people ever. Every night was the same, regardless the town or area. The music was great and the food far better than expected.

In Scotland the pubs were 180 out from Ireland. I could not engage the first Scot in the first conversation. I hear they are afraid they will have to buy you a drink if they talk to you! Had customer service issues repeatedly in Scotland, yet none anywhere else we traveled.

Found incredible Irish whisky (a huge surprise) and mediocre scotch...

Spent a week in Iceland before flying back to NY for 2 weeks and then back to AK. Came away missing Ireland and Iceland and wondering how Scotland could survive with no return customers....

Two kinds of weather; rain and about to rain, go there in summer if you can.

Read up on Scottish history before you go. You can recognize the roots of American Scots Irish culture in southwest Scotland and again in Ulster if you get over to Ireland. Visit the Culloden battlefield up by Inverness where Bonny Prince Charlie was defeated in 1745, famously the last Highland uprising (tho in the usual way of such things, a bunch of Highlanders fought on the English side too).

Glasgow is/was a famously rough town, I loved it riding through there on a bicycle seven years back, felt like home, but then I was raised urban Northern English. As yet fewer immigrants up there than in England too (in contrast to London for example, where it feels like actual English are getting hard to find).

Try and ignore Scottish politics tho. As stated even further Left/Woke/Progressive/LBTQ/Socialist than England, which is saying a lot.

My days of flying with the masses... are behind me...

Fugg people.

If you are not actively engaging EVERY enemy you encounter... you are allowing another to fight for you... and that is cowardice... plain and simple.
