Never seen an EG with a thin metal collar on the forearm. It wasn't a takedown forearm, it was screwed on. A 1950's EG, I believe.. Seller wasn't interested in removing forearm even though he recognized it as being non-standard.

It was a good fit, but not as good as the fit of a factory collar on a takedown model. Can't think of why they'd have gone to the trouble...

That's a head scratcher alright. Can't imagine going to that trouble for any reason??

Too bad the seller was so indifferent!

I assume a new fore end that didn't fit. It's called a shim or spacer laugh

I've seen some EG's with small gaps on the forearm, but not that big of gap. Maybe the best guess tho..
Couldn't be to shift the forearm forward, since it would move the screwhole out of alignment with the barrel stud - and the screw hole hadn't been redone.

Perhaps the butt end of the forearm got damaged and was cut off after which the spacer was necessary for alignment of the screw.

Maybe to hide a non matching serial number?

Shave the wood, add the spacer?

The only earthly reason I can come up with is an attempt to accurize.?
