Has anyone seen a Lyman Deerstalker flintlock for sale under $600?
I have a .54 with 20 shots out of it and it is causing me to think about selling.
T/C Hawken is just as bad...

Local shop has synthetic ones for under 6.

They ugly.


What issues are you having

Mass produced flintlocks. Nothing but problems.

My issue is owning three flintlocks. A .54 T/C Renegade with a Green Mountain RB barrel, a T/C .50 Hawken, and the .54 Deerstalker.

I had a time getting my 45 cal Hawken to run.
But once I found the right patch, good flints, opened the touch hole, and 4d pan powder it started shooting.
At some point way back Ross Seifried did an article on tuning up one. I’m happy with mine.
How much do you need for your TC Hawkin

I always replace the touch hole with one from Uncle Mike's. FFFFg in the pan and FFFg as the main charge. Even in the .54 cal. FFFg needs less powder to achieve the same performance as FFg. I only run patch and ball. A member here sent me some Lee R.E.A.L. bullets but they didn't do any better in the Lyman. Always seems to come back to a .020 patch pre-lubed with 1000+

I finally got to shoot that old T/C Hawken.
It likes a .495 ball and .015 patch. 80 hrai s of FFFg. One of the best shooting g T/C guns I have owned.
Can't quite match the .54 Green Mountain. But I can get 4 shots in 3" at 100 yards. A fair bit lighter to carry arould.

4" @100 will put meat on the table. Don't sweat it.

I never cared much for TC locks because of their coil spring mainsprings (and hit-or-miss hardness of frizzens). But they work ok at their price point. They'll never give the feel, or the "snappiness", of a good quality lock that incorporates a good flat spring. An analogy would be the acceleration of a Ford Taurus versus a 5-Series BMW. The difference in acceleration between a coil spring driven hammer versus a flat spring driven hammer is noticeable and can mean nothing but a difference in accuracy. No matter what, it's barrel movement between the time the sear is tripped and the ball leaves the muzzle that's the biggest bugabear when shooting a flinter.

I have the same 54 deerstalker and it does pretty well with patched ball; If you get that barrel cleaned of all that preservative they put in them and get another 100 patched ball through it then you will see some outstanding accuracy from it.If you shoot conicals out of it lead will build up and patched ball accuracy will decline unless it is scrubbed out. Your gm barrel is about as good as it gets. My oid tc hawken was an under 2" rifle from the 100 yard bench. Lyman is a good lock but the older not improved hammer and frizzen on the tc guns were pretty bad rock crushers and not good spark throwers. It's not a cheap sport anymore. You could get 600 for that Lyman in good condition if your looking to sell. Parts for a build would be over 1k now and machining costs would be high.

The parts in the future for tc/lyman may be an issue. I have 2 tc pa hunters with improved locks and original 1/66 and drop-in gm barrels and can't believe accuracy would get any better with a custom.
