I've replaced the magazine spring and follower in my Mauser 98 with a set from a short action 700. Question now is, how do I make a spacer for the magazine box? Teflon, wood, plastic?

Gun Parts Corp has a couple of options: #1 and #2. #2 is similar to what Zastava uses for short action cartridges (at least in a .243 I bought). I have also made spacers out of easily cut plastic (believe it was some type of nylon).

I have a custom pre-64 M70 358 Win. The builder used what looks like bakelite for the spacer. The rifles functions extremely well.

Fn did a sheet metal spacer to the rear. You used to be able to get them from numrich. I haven’t looked in years though.

At the time I had a 98 Mauser M48 Yugo and don't recall what the free bore was. Military chambers have a long free bore, but the Yugo M48 was non issue. Most likely yours has a long freebore.

The Yugo rifles are an intermediate length Mauser. Just a bit shorter than a standard 98, but not as short as a Mexican, or kurz action....
