What a coinkydink! Yesterday at the range a guy comes over to the 50 from the 100 because he can’t get his Axis on paper. Still not on paper at 50, so I tell him to remove the bolt and drag my Hart rest over and we put his gun in it. It’s a foot right at 50, sighting through the barrel. He holds up one of those dinky laser thingys and asks what I think of it, like he doesn’t already know. Anyway, I helped him boresight it, showing him how instead of just doing it for him.

That .30/06 Axis was kicking his ass BTW, and everything he tried doing with it was a struggle: dropping the mag and removing/replacing the bolt. He fussed about that some, so I asked how much he paid for it. “$200”, he said. I said, “well, there you go”.

What fresh Hell is this?

Our local Wal-Mart's manager was a personal hunting friend. He increased his sporting goods department. He expanded the hunting merch, including firearms. He hired knowledgeable personnel & would special order items upon request. It was good while it lasted.

I usually bore sight at 25 yards and typically find the first shot within an inch or so at that range. I’d never hunt without shooting, but that accuracy would kill very many of the deer I’ve taken. They are pretty big and are often shot at close range.

He got close enough to the counter that I

Wow! That reminds me of a similar event.

It was about 18 years ago that a coworker dropped a bunch of $$$ on a stainless Ruger #1 and scope setup at a very large and well known sporting goods retailer here in Michigan. He was proudly showing it to me when it was noticed that the scope had been mounted with a cant. Knowing that I'm fairly "gunny", he asked if I had the right screwdriver to fix it. I did, and proceeded to loosen all 4 screws on the rear ring cap, then moved to the front cap, where I found all 4 cap screws loose; not even snugged.

This is just another reason why I and alone mount my scopes and sight my rifles.
