My son and i are getting his rifle dialed in for a out of state hunt.
We have tried multiple platforms and calibers and none of them fit him well, until...
He fell in love with the Ruger ranch 300blk, added a hawk optic and micro 30 can onto it.

This is a sweet set up for money!

What platform/cals have you found work well with the kids?

I am habitually following threads about kids' first rifles. Tagging in.

(For what it's worth, my current plan is a Howa 1500 in either 243 with a stock cut down to about 12" LOP and a suppressor.)

I started my son and daughter on model 7’s in 7-08. Using H4895 I downloaded to around 2000 fps with 139 Interlock. Put new limbsaver pads on and fitted comb risers so they could get a cheek weld on the stock and ride it rather than get slapped by it. They were on standard loads in two years because they weren’t afraid of the rifles.

I currently have a weatherby vanguard youth in 243, that was supposed to be his starter, buy the ranch just felt better for him.
So weatherby is about to go on the chopping block lol

Great idea! 7-08 is a great round too.
Thankfully my boy is all about big recoil, he shoots my rifles on the rest all the time. He needs to be able to control this one lol

Son’s Remington 700 youth .7-08 in a McMillan hunters edge, timney, milled follower, conquest 3-9x in Talley LW’s.
RL15 under 140gr SGK’s. His first of a few deer, turkey and a black bear with that combo.

Very nice
Congratulations

There's many in my area that would boo hoo
about the deer being too young.
Looks ok to me
It'll look a lot better in freezer bags

I usually build a 6.5 Grendel for parents that want a light recoiling gun, of light weight. However I have a friend that, the entire family, all twelve members, shoot one cartridge on a 3 section size farm, every one of their rifles is a 243. The head of the family is 6'6" and goes about 350, a heavy equipment operator. The 243 Win with the right twist barrel with 100s or heavier will just work on deer sized game in the hands of a youngster, as the recoil is very manageable to get excellent accuracy.
