I am planning to replace the safety on my Mauser 98 with a 3 position one from Gentry but recall another some on here liked better but can't remember its name or why it was preferred. Can someone help with that.

Dakota doesn't look like a Gentry. They may look similar, and operate similarly. PTG and Dakota look the same. Of teh two, I've had fewer issues with the Dakota.

My preferred was the Ed Lapour model, the detents are better. You can always go from fire to safe (2nd Position) without having to bypass then return to it. NECG carries the Recknagel brand which is nice as well.

Like the Lapour better than my M70's safety

Jim Wisner is making another lot of them now. His original design went to ED LaPOUR and he sold that to Nate Lambeth. I have used Jim's units almost exclusively for quite a while and make it a point to stay away from Gentry's, too much trouble and poor design
