I have two of these rifles, one in .338 Win Mag, the other is a .270 Win. For some time I've noticed the .270 will only take rounds from the magazine- if I place the round directly into the chamber the bolt will not close as the claw extractor doesn't slip over the case rim. The .338 Win Mag however, will accept either methods of loading.
Has anyone else ran into this problem, and how do I fix it?
Thanks for your replies.

Coot,
I know it has to do with a bevel (or lack of one) on the extractor. I don't know the procedure for fixing it, but there are some good gunsmiths here who should be able to answer your question.

Copy the shape of the .338 extractor seems to be the easy answer but take a close look at the bolt face and how far the extractor lays towards the center of the bolt face. Hold both bolts in your hands side by side.
If you get a round stuck in the chamber you can squeeze the side of the extractor and then it should snap over the rim of the 270.
James Wisner makes aftermarket M 70 extractors. He could help I am sure.

One is controlled feed and the other push feed, different animals.

If they are both pre64 actions, neither one is push feed. To my knowledge, all pre 64 M70's had the beveled extractor so one could feed a round directly into the chamber. If your rifle is a pre 64 (or for that matter, if it is a POST 64) and it won't do this, it's time for gunsmithing help. Jim

They both should jump the rim on the cartridge. On the one that doesn't, put a round in the chamber and try to close the bolt, when it is as far as it wants to go, using your fingers on your left hand , press in on the side of the extractor as hard as you can while trying to close the bolt. If the bolt closes, it just needs a little sanding, you can wrap a piece of 400 grit sand paper around a 338 case, using the original shape as a guide sand the nose of the extractor and keep trying it till it will close. If you can't get it to close with the squeeze, or don't understand where to sand, take it to a riflesmith. Good luck.
