Which would be easiest on the barrel between a a 26 gr 4198 load vs 31 gr AA 2230, both yielding in that 3200 fps range. The 4198 load would run at higher pressure.

Do you really think 4K difference is going to matter? Rate of fire would be the parameter effecting barrel life.

you must not run a lot of 4198., it would be my choice of the two.

What are your thoughts on why you would prefer 4198 in a 223 equivalent loading of the 6 BR over a starting load of AA 2230?

I know 4198... I've tried 2230, but personally I've not been that impressed with it as I have been with other AA powders I have tried.. in many cartridges in the smaller sizes.
Just haven't seen the consistency in performance and uniformity that I've experienced with 4198.

Well 3200fps is very anemic for a 6BR and 55/ 58's. My 6BR has a Hart 24" barrel, 14twist, 0 freebore chamber. All I shoot in that one are light bullets, haven't tried either brand of 4198. In that barrel (and a 6BRAI) AA2230 is very accurate and also burns cool. This barrel will probably last a nice long time.
AA2230 New lot 8lb jug - Lapua brass - Rem.7-1/2
34.0=3708 accuracy node 34.5=3776 35.0=3855 accuracy node, hot load but the brass handles it.
**** I did a comparison with 2 lots of AA2230. A 1lb bottle and a new 8lb jug from several years later. They shot very differently. The earlier 1lb was very accurate in high 3600's with 34.0gr, after that accuracy went all to h%ll. Big difference.

Haven't shot it for accuracy yet but 26.0 gr of IMR 4198 averaged 3375 fps at what appears to be low pressure. If it's accurate, I would have a hard time justifying buying a 223. Also, seems to have very mild report with a suppressor.

My 34.0 gr load of AA 2230 does 3700. I'm looking for a light load so I don't feel tempted to build a 223. I don't like so many guns laying around since each one usually needs something done to it and it gets too time consuming, especially since I have several other interests.

So far my experience with the 58 gr. VMax at 3200 fps has been excellent. Soft bullet. Have shot three big ones and not one exited the coon.
