Hello

I picked up a custom 375 H&H rifle built on a Winchester 70 action. It has custom mounts that require a fairly long tube/long eye relief matte finish 1” scope with less than 40mm objective. I would like to keep the mounts on it and find a robust scope in a perfect world. I have a WTB ad for a Zeiss Conquest 4x32 which would be about perfect but haven’t found one yet. Any other recommendations short of finding a Kahles or S&B 4X? A matte Leupold FXII might work but it isn’t a really long scope like the Conquest. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

In your position I would put an old Leupold long tube 4x on it.

I know they aren't high end, but they are light and they last.

There was a longish tube recent production weaver in the classifieds not long ago to get you through until you find better, but I suspect you might like it enough that it stays.

Thanks Guys. I would like to get a scope that can stand up to the recoil for the long haul. I might have to find a Leupold if nothing else is available.

I have 2 Leupold M8-4X scopes on my rifles. I mounted 3 more on rifles for friends. All of them are 20-40 years old. I slide down a ditch bank in a rain storm with one of mine and scratched it up badly. It still held zero. So, I figure they should be pretty good used scopes.

IMHO the weaver classic Japanese 4x38 would be the ticket unless you want to move up price wise to conquest and leap up to the SB.

I have a few of these in 4x and 6x. Super bright and wide FOV. Have a lifetime warranty serviced by Bushnell.

Also have a lot of mounting space and are very lightweight

Thanks guys. Seems like the Zeiss Conquest 4x32 and a Leupold 3.5-10x40 is about the right 1” scope length. Just hoped there was something a little higher end about the same size that would work. Also, I need the long eye relief. The old Burris Signature Safari might work. The 1” scope options are getting slim in my opinion.

Those Weaver 4x Classic are quite short in the 1" section for mounting rings. They work fine on a short action but would be problematic for a longer action. They are nice scopes otherwise.

Weaver in the middle.

I have a fondness for the fixed 4x and have for me have found the S&B 4 x and the IOR Valdada 4 x 32 to be my favorite. The IOR is a well built scope with great class not too far from the quality of the S&B. I would pick the IOR over the Zeiss.

Are we having a lot of fixed power Leupolds losing zero?

Nightforce makes a 4.5x competition scope that may work if you're happy with the FOV.

They quit making them a few years back but they pop up from time to time used.

A nice matte Leupold vx2 vx3 3-9/3.5-10 is the ticket here imo. If that’s too much maybe a 1.5-5.

Looks like I found a Conquest 4x. Hopefully that does the trick. Thanks for all the input!

The Trijicon accupoint 1x4 would be something I would look at.

1x on a DG rifle is good policy and having 4x to make that 200 yard follow up is really nice.

That Trijicon is a 30mm scope though I think. I need a 1” scope.

264mag, I have an extra IOR 4x 1" tube scope in the box that has been mounted, but not used. I think my eyes need a 6x now for an all arounder fixed power hunting scope so may sell or trade if you are interested. Next to the S&B 4x I have it is not that far away from it in clarity and brightness. Well made.

Not 4x, but you may want to consider a Leupold m8 3x, or steel-tubed Weaver k3-1 micro-trac (USA made, has improved lens coatings, and is a tough scope). Both have 1" straight tubes, have good eye relief for a 375 H&H and allow flexible mounting on long actions.

I don't think you will notice much difference between a fixed 3x vs 4x scope at any practical hunting distance.

If you definite!y want a fixed 4x, consider a Bausch & Lomb 4x scope. It has a 40 mm objective though- (not sure if that "just fits" or "just misses" your clearance issue with your rings). They were from the 1990s(?) (Japan made, with nice glass), and were the top-of-the-line product line for B&L when made. They have a triangular logo on the turrent cover, to I.D. them. They have a long tube for mounting on long actions.

I have all three: Leupold 3x, Weaver (USA) k3-1 3x, and the B&L 4x. I like the Weaver k3-1 3x very much, as well as the B&L 4x. They are forgotten scopes that are excellent performers.

If you want to step down to 2.5x, the Japan-made Weaver Classic 2.5x is another overlooked gem. Very bright and clear glass with excellent resolution, 1" straight tube ( but not as long as the Weaver k3-1). It has click adjustments, and 4" of the relief. Advertising had claims they passed 10,000 rounds firing tests of 375 H&H recoil. I have one of them also, and really like it.

These scopes are in the $125-$175++ range. They may not be "prestigious enough" for a custom big bore rifle; but, they have been delivering strong performance for years. They are true work horses.
