Mule Deer,

I’m new to the 7x57 having recently purchased a Berlin DWM 98 based custom rifle. Consequently, I’ve been on a binge reading your articles and many postings here in order to apply it to loading for my rifle for use this deer season.

I recently worked up a ladder test using 162 ELDM’s and IMR 4064 per Lyman data. The loads are within the range listed for 7x57, but my velocity greatly exceeds the manual’s listed max. However, my loads and velocities fall in line with the max velocity listed for 7mm-08 for the same powder and bullet weight combo, which seems to equate to roughly 30-‘06 pressure standard.

Considering the action, can I assume that this is a safe maximum based on the greater volume of the 57mm case per the above?

Lastly, do your load-to-velocity recommendations apply to other powders outside the burn rate of the 4350’s (such as IMR 4064 above)?

At the risk of asking you to repeat yourself, I thank you for your thought and time (and for anyone else’s who might reply to my questions for that matter).

are you hunting short range with those ELD-M's?... if yes, try not to exceed 2700 fps muzzle velocity to prevent over expansion... i'm using H4350 with those... getting accuracy at approximately 2600 & 2700 fps...

Should be good to go with that action and velocity, especially since they align with 7mm-08 data.

Should be good to go with that action, and velocities in the 7mm-08 ranges.

Op, I load for three rifles chambered to the 7x57. I've been using RL17 with 7-08 data and getting excellent results. Case life is very good and very good accuracy. Currently I'm running the 150 gr. Nosler at a bit over 2800 FPS. I'd planned an elk hunt using that load but a car wreck kind shut that down. Maybe next year.
The rifles I have are a Ruger #1A, Winchester XTR Feather weight and a Mauser custom based on a 1950s FN Mauser action. The load has worked just find in all three rifles. I also have a 140 gr. ballistic tip load at 2800 FPS using W760.
