Here's another vote for a Howa Mini in 6.5 Grendel. Pendleton Custom Stocks will build a youth length stock for less than $500. Later when the child has grown and needs an adult length stock, PCS will lengthen that stock and repaint it for only $50.

Remington made the HS Precision stocked stainless Model Seven in 6.5 Creedmoor. Get one and get a triggertech Primary and be done.

I’m one of the chief Mini pushers here. Have two myself and chose one for my grandson’s first rifle. Can’t go wrong with one in 6.5 Grendel or 6 ARC. Get the carbon model and buy the JO floorplate, or get a barreled action from Brownells and then the FP and a Pendleton stock. She’ll shoot that thing forever.

6x45 would feed and be lots of fun in a mod7.
But the 6.5x47 is far better.

Gotta love how far off task these threads go.

[quote=ShortMagFan]Unless you want to be really frustrated I’d not mess with a Manners stock

I’d go McMillan or just use a factory stock"

What's the reason behind manners not make a mod7 version worth messing with?
No fight involved, did you have a bad experience?

I've got a dozen manners stocks all are first rate.

I have also had good success on mod7 with bansner's stocks. They take some work but I'm told they are back in production.

Cerakote is hot garbage, skip it and use a different option.

35 Remington. Always thought a model 7 in 35 Remington would make an excellent combo. Always looked at the Remington custom shop specs to see if they still offered this before they sold out. A 35 Remington with a little extra freebore to handle heavies makes a nice thumper. This case has just enough powder capacity to send a 250gr projectile over 2000fps with reasonable pressure for long case life.

She shot a 6.5/06 last weekend and was fine with that level of recoil. So what I have so far is an older REM 7 in 223. I’m going to have Douglas do the the barrel work and open the bolt face. I know there’s better barrels out there but this one will be for plinking and hunting and most importantly they are 10 miles from my door and they said 3 weeks to complete the work. I’m going with 6.5x47 because I’ve got buckets of 6.5 bullets. Things I’ll still need some advice on is the bottom metal, mag, follower, etc. who makes a good one for the model 7 ? I’m looking at Manners for the stock unless someone has a better idea. Also where would you guys recommend sending it for Cerakote ?

What are your daughter’s thoughts on this project? Do you have sentimental attachment to the Rem M7? You could likely face feeding issues trying to do what you propose. Plus the M7 doesn’t have many aftermarket choices. If you build something you like and it doesn’t really fit her well and doesn’t feed well you could make her not like the rifle. I guess you will be handloading for the 6.5x47, right? Is reloading something you want her to learn? Choosing a cartridge which has easy to find factory ammo would make both of your lives easier. Just my 2 cents.

Ok guys i really appreciate all the feedback and ideas. She does have an emotional attachment to this particular M7 so we are sticking with it. After considering the amount of work it would take to get the 6.5x47 to feed in this rifle we decided to go with a 223 AI and a 1-8 twist barrel. I have several hundred 77 gr LRX bullets she can start out with for deer. I have also acquired a M7 Bansner stock for this project. The goal for this project is to get her involved in reloading, case forming, ect, and also to help her understand the work, planning, and money involved in building a semi custom rifle.

That idea works too, but I'd stick with the standard 223 and a 7 twist for future ammo solutions. I've had the AI version before. For what I want to do with a sporter 223, the SAAMI is fine. I believe the 77LRX is listed as needing a 7 twist for best results?

Yeah, 7 twist and regular 223 to maximize stability and feeding prowess. The 223 AI has been a fickle feeder with minimal velocity gain, IME.

I couldn't agree more. Put a light scope on it and let her learn to hit a bottle cap at 40-50yds., from rested field positions (eventually). She'll learn to shoot without using tripods like a photographer. The .223 you have should be fun to shoot a lot.

I have to agree with the preponderance of opinions stated above and I see that you did, too. I'd skip the AI version and go with the 7" twist, too. The 77LRX are LONG and if that's what Barnes recommends, go with their recommendation. Actually, the 5.56x45 chamber specs have the longer throat which you'll need. I think the Wyld chamber has the long throat, too.
Have you thought of the 6x45 wildcat (6mm/223)? A better big game choice than the 223. Talk to Seafire here on the fire about it. Just put a 223 into a 6x45 FL resize die and you are done! Good luck.

I have and have had a few 223AI’s with 1-8” barrels. My last rebarrel I chose the standard 223 with a 1-7” twist for the same reasons mentioned.

I think you and your daughter will both enjoy a nice little 223.

I'm sure the 77lrx are great but wouldn't be my choice for shooting deer, but that's just me.. A cup/core 55-60 bullet in the neck or heart lung will work quite well.. I fear you'll have some long tracking jobs with the LRX. Hope not, but-----

best of luck in your project !!!

A fast twist 22-250 is wicked. My girl cousin in SE Texas just uses the 55gr soft points, stacked them up!
Back when you could find brass, I had a little 6x47 made up on a Mod 700 SA. It was simply a 222 magnum case necked up to 6mm. I used a 27 inch barrel to get 2700+ fps/85 XBT. (think carbine length 243) I killed axis and Oryx with it.
