when you find the gun I have a excellent condition magazine or two that I will probably never use in mine, and you can probably talk me out of.

There is one on Gun Broker, very nice, $1500 I'm guessing you're talking about this rifle? It isn't that nice, and for that money I'd try to get the Winchester Model 54 or take my chances and bid on the Savage Model 40 Super Sporter. There is no way that 788 is worth $1600+ after shipping, taxes, and transfer. Possibly a third to half the price asked tops.

800-1000 is the going rate for these and has been for a few years, only a few were made in 30/30 and they do bring a premium to the die hard 788 guys

That rifle is a sub $800 rifle just based on the pictures. It is nowhere near EX to VG condition.

If a guy is patient, they can find one. Three have sold on GB for $850-970 since October. I have one, and I wouldn't part with it right now and I'd rate mine as good. It's a shooter for sure, has some bluing wear, plastic knob on the safety is missing, and it doesn't have front or rear sights. They are neat rifles, and I jumped at the opportunity to own one 15 years ago.

Yeah, the medallion is tacky but the gun is otherwise is in pretty nice condition, IMO.

I know some Winchester guys that love these as well. Some of these guys even collect the different manufactures 30-30 bolt actions. Like the stevens and Savage and the Winchester model 54's that were rarely chambered for this cartridge. They are a joy to shoot, and generally exceptionally accurate. The one I posted a picture of will outshoot my buddies model 54, but the 54 has more of a cool factor. I also recently saw a Stevens bolt action 30-30 at a gunshop, and they were wanting $275 for it. I almost bought it because you just don't see them very often. One thing I can say about the 788 is it feeds very smooth, and it has very positive extraction. I don't really care for the sharp steel mags, for a hunting rifle. I'd rather carry a model 54, but that is picking nits. Good luck to the OP with his search. However, it is very unlikely he's going to be finding one for $650, anytime soon.
