NATO Chief Warns of 'Bad News' From War in Ukraine
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg warned of impending "bad news" coming out of Ukraine in its ongoing conflict against Russia, part of a call for the West to maintain its support of Kyiv.
Stoltenberg made the comments during an interview with German broadcaster ARD on Saturday. The NATO chief didn't elaborate, but his warning came a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his military to add another 170,000 troops. It came two days before the White House said it was "out of money" to support Ukraine past the end of the year.
"Wars develop in phases," Stoltenberg told ARD. "We have to support Ukraine in both good and bad times. We should also be prepared for bad news."
Congress allocated $111 billion to assist Ukraine, including $67 billion in military procurement funding, $27 billion for economic and civil assistance, and $10 billion for humanitarian aid. However, Office of Management and Budget Director Shalanda Young sent a letter to congressional leaders Monday saying that all but 3% of that has been depleted.
"We are out of money to support Ukraine in this fight," Young wrote.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, the former heavyweight boxing champion, observes that the country is sliding into authoritarianism as its war with Russia drags on.
Klitschko made the remarks during an interview with German news website Der Speigel that was published Friday.
"At some point we will no longer be any different from Russia, where everything depends on the whim of one man," Klitschko told the outlet, according to the Kyiv Independent.
"Interestingly, the Senate forum that Zelensky was to address involved a classified briefing. Likely he realized he was not going to convince anyone, and his 'star status' has long since been in decline. At this moment, even the mayor of Kyiv is attacking him, calling Zelensky an "autocrat" and "corrupt" - and saying Ukraine is losing because of this."

Russian opposition party Yabloko founder Grigory Yavlinsky advocated for a ceasefire in Ukraine as part of his presidential bid likely in an attempt to distinguish himself from Russian President Vladimir Putin and give voice to Russians who support a ceasefire. The Kremlin may be strategically allowing Yavlinsky to criticize the Russian government in order to preserve its veneer of electoral legitimacy and to delegitimize possible support for a ceasefire among factions in the Kremlin. Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized the benefits that migrants provide to the Russian economy, while promoting ongoing efforts to Russify migrants in Russia and citizens of post-Soviet countries. Russian President Vladimir Putin will travel to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia on December 6 and will host Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi in Russia on December 7— a bout of diplomatic outreach likely focused on strengthening Russia’s position with Gulf States while continuing to solidify the deepening Russian-Iranian security partnership. Armenia appears to be effectively abstaining from participation in the Russian-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO). The Kremlin continues to intensify censorship efforts, targeting prominent Russian messaging and social media app Telegram.
