Been there a number of times. Never got a hat from Rands. Had a couple built by one of their prior top hat-makers that opened up his own shop.

My gut reaction is there are other options that might run less money. Not saying they aren't good. Just that they always struck me as a bit overpriced.

No, I usually get my hats from the Resistol Outlet in Garland or from Leddy's in Fort Worth.

Never had the privilege to have a custom made hat. Usually buy an off the rack hat and take it home and reshape it myself. Have my own steamer and stretcher.

I have two. They were not inexpensive, but they have lasted for many years and still look great. If in the market for a custom hat, would recommend highly.

I have two. Great hats and well made. I also have one from Colorado Mountain Hat Co. https://www.cmhats.com/gallery
They make a great hat as well and I wear that one more than the Rand hats

It’s important to spend $400 on a hat, to acquire the look of that mean guy on Yellowstone that rolls around in a black utility bed and aviators beating the shît out of 20 bikers single-handedly.

The namesake no longer owns Rand's but is still in the hat business. https://ritchranddesigns.com/

I don't know if he's only doing restoration/renovation as shown on his site or if he's also crafting new hats, but may be worth contacting. He might be under a no compete clause. https://www.facebook.com/RandsCusto...-i-recently-embarked-o/1438232503026681/

Rands make a pretty good custom hat for the money.

I still have a Rands rancher and one that is cattleman/packer style with a sloped crown which for some reason back in the day was referred to as the Big Hole look.

If you want to save some money, you can go to any Murdoch's and pick out a hat with the "Yellowstone" brand on it. Just tell everyone while you are wearing it that you are from Missoula or California.

Btw, if you happen to be in Great Falls, check out Hoglund's Western Wear as they have lots of "store bought" cowboy hats. The ones made in Bowie, Texas are decent.

I have a western derby from Rands. Good hat, but I've had it for 40 years, so my experience probably doesn't reflect much on today's situation.

I saw a flyer for his work at the bootery the other day.

I have had Randy Rains build me a couple hats over the years. He was one of Rand's main guys years ago and went out on his own. Calls the company Law Dog Hats in Billings.

Your favorite Stetson get lost in a stampede?
Take it to Huskey Hat Co.
When Stanley gets through, it will look like it just came off of a store shelf! 😉👍
I suppose if it was ripped to pieces, Stanley couldn't help you.
I've seen hats that had been worn daily for years come out of Huskey's looking brand new!

I've had a half dozen custom hats made by Mike Miller at Northwest Hat Co. in Eugene, Or.
My last one ordered was $475. for 100X beaver, and should be finished by Christmas.
Mike Miller puts a device on your head and adjusts it to your exact head size and shape,
Then makes your hat to fit this.

They go up every time I get a new one, but still a great hat at a reasonable price.
